Tonight the Mt. Pleasant Panther softball team plays at New London in non conference softball.  KILJ-FM 105.5 and kilj.com will carry the first game of the double header live beginning at 5:30 p.m.

SOFTBALL SCORES FROM LAST NIGHT:  Mediapolis beat Winfield Mt. Union 10-4, IMS edged Wapello 4-3, Pekin swept Columbus Community 13-12 and 8-4, Cardinal of Eldon beat Harmony twice 12-0 and 19-0, Central Lee swept Van Buren 2-0 and 11-4.

 

BASEBALL SCORES FROM LAST NIGHT: West Burlington swept Holy Trinity Catholic 13-6 and 18-7, Mediapolis beat Winfield Mt. Union 10-2, Danville won over Notre Dame 9-0, Van Buren beat Central Lee 11-5 and 12-0, Wapello rolled over IMS 12-2.

 

Four members of the University of Iowa football team have been named to Athlon Sports’ Preseason All-Big Ten teams. Former Mt. Pleasant Panther Wide Receiver  Jordon Cotton was named as a first team/kick return specialist, Line Backer  James Morris (second team/defense), Place Kicker Mike Meyer (second team/kicker) and Offensive Lineman  Brandon Scherff (third team/offense),  each earned preseason accolades from Athlon Sports.

Jordon Cotton, a senior, led the Big Ten last season and ranked 14th nationally in kickoff returns, averaging 28.2 yards in 19 attempts. The Mount Pleasant, Iowa, native had a 92-yard kickoff return against Penn State, which ties as the 10th longest return in program history. Cotton was a first team All-Big Ten kick returner by CollegeSportsMadness.com last season. Cotton also had 12 receptions for 172 yards and a touchdown in 2012.

 

NASCAR star Kenny Schrader will try his luck up against the best in the IMCA Modified ranks this Thursday night, June 20th at the Lee County Speedway in Donnellson, IA. As Budweiser Open Wheel Night brings the Karl Performance Hawkeye Dirt Tour for IMCA Modifieds, the Brockway Mechanical & Roofing 360 Sprint Invaders, the Donnellson Tire IMCA Stock Cars, Shottenkirk Parts Express IMCA SportMods, and the Sunline Auto Parts IMCA Sport Compacts to the track.

This night will also make history, as this is will be the first time that the Karl Performace Hawkeye Dirt Tour for IMCA Modifieds and the Brockway Mechanical & Roofing Sprint Invaders will race on the same night at the same track. The Karl Performance Hawkeye Dirt Tour Modifieds will be racing for a top prize of $1,000 to win, with $150 posted to start the A Main! While the Brockway Mechanical & Roofing Sprint Invaders will be going for a top prize of $1,200 to win, with $300 up for grabs to start there A Main! 

Also in action on Thursday night will be the Donnellson Tire IMCA Stock Cars, the Shottenkirk Parts Express IMCA SportMods, and the Sunline Auto Parts IMCA Sport Compacts. The Donnellson Tire IMCA Stock Cars will be racing for $500 to win and $70 to start. While the Sunline Auto Parts IMCA Sport Compacts will be racing for $200 to win, thanks to Hornung Racing and Dunker Concrete, Skipp unker. Dunker Concrete has also added $50 to the 2nd, 3rd, and 4th place spots in the Sunline Auto Parts IMCA Sport Compacts feature!

The Budweiser IMCA Modifieds, Shottenkirk Parts Express IMCA SportMods, and Sunline Auto Parts IMCA Sport Compacts will be awarded track points, IMCA national, regional and state points. While the Donnellson Tire IMCA Stock Cars will not be racing for track points, but will be awarded IMCA national, regional and state points. All classes will be a draw / redraw event, with no entry fees or track registration fees! Grandstand admission will be adults $15, seniors $13, students (7 – 17) $10, and kids 6 & under FREE! Pit passes will be $30, ages 7 – 13 $15, and ages 6 & under $10. Gates will open at 5:30pm, hot laps at 7:00pm, and racing at 7:30pm.

 

 

It started with a light rain Saturday night, June 15,

 but before heat and qualifying races could be completed the rain would

 get heavier and with no end in sight officials were forced to call it

 a night for the fans and 96 cars that were ready to race. Tickets from

 the June 15 event may be used at any race the remainder of the 2013

 season valued at $5. Please note If you come on a regular Saturday

 night program, you will just pay difference. Remaining $5 Fan

 Appreciation  nights are Sat. July 6 & Sat. Aug. 24.  All PIT PASSES

 may be used any night throughout the season at face value of $25.

This Saturday, June 22 will be the W.T. Gabeline and Sons Trucking 305 Sprints, Coors Silver

 Bullet IMCA Modifieds, Weikert Iron and Metals IMCA Sport Mods, Pepsi

 IMCA Stock Cars, I Connect You/Louisa Communications 4 Cylinders and

 Mod Lites will be in action.

There are plenty more Saturday races in store but you might want to

 mark your calendars for some upcoming special events.

Wednesday, July 3 the Brockway Mechanical Sprint Invader 360’s will

 return  to 34 Raceway to make up their May 26 rainout. Along with the

 360 sprints will be the Mod Lites, 4 Cylinders and Vintage cars. A pit

 stop and fan interaction mid race event will give the race fans a

 little extra fun.

Another can’t miss event will be the Pepsi UMP Summer Nationals Hell

 Tour taking on the 3/8 mile on Saturday, July 13. The $10,000 to win

 late model event will draw some of the best in late model racing as

 they provide the ground shaking excitement of the high powered

 engines.  4 Cylinders, 4 Wheelers and pit bikes will also add to the

 fun.

 

The Miami Heat stayed alive in the NBA Championship series with a 103-100 win in overtime in game 6.  The final game will be played Thursday night at 8 p.m. in Miami.

The NHL Stanley Cup Finals saw Boston beat Chicago 2-1 in game one in Boston last night, game two will be tonight in Bean Towan.

 

Bob Jensen Activities Director at Mt. Pleasant High School has announced the following Mt. Pleasant games :

JV/V baseball at Oskaloosa from June 4th has been rescheduled for July 11th at Oskaloosa at 5:30 p.m.

JV softball: Washington at Mt. Pleasant from June 6th has been rescheduled for July 3rd at Mt. Pleasant at 12:00 p.m., noon.

JV baseball: Washington at Mt. Pleasant from June 6th has been rescheduled for July 16th at Mt. Pleasant at 12:00 p.m., noon.
