The DNR checked the site of a tire fire southwest of Montrose Tuesday for possible environmental concerns.
The DNR found no evidence of runoff from the fire or from water fire fighters sprayed on the fire Monday morning.
“Fortunately the tire pile was in a low spot with foundry sand underneath it,” said Terry Jones, a DNR environmental specialist. “I checked Sugar Creek below the fire and it was clear, too.”
The fire occurred at the former Horner salvage yard early Monday morning. Officials estimate about 1,000 tires burned at the site. Firefighters from Montrose and two township fire departments responded to the fire.
The DNR will continue to monitor the site and cleanup activities.
