Mt. Pleasant Panther baseball team has a 17-12 record to open up district action at Fairfield at 5 p.m. tonightagainst Ft. Madison who has a record of 16-22. The two teams have split during the regular season so this rubber game will send the winner onto the next round.  KILJ-FM 105.5 and will carry the Panther game live. The 7 p.m. game tonight will have Fairfield playing host to Washington.  The winners will meet in Fairfield on Monday at 7 p.m. 

The other district that will help make up Substate 4 will be played at Centerville with 7th ranked Chariton playing Keokuk at 5 p.m. and Centerville playing Oskaloosa at 7 p.m. , the winners will meet Monday.  The substate game will be played July 24th at a site to be determined.

Class 2A District baseball final action will happen Saturday night in Wapello at 7 p.m., Mediapolis will be playing Mid Prairie.


Class 1A District semi final action took place in Fairfield last night with Van Buren (21-5) downing Winfield Mt. union (6-17) 13-2 in a game you heard live on KILJ-FM. Van Buren started the top of the 1st with 2 runs, WMU answered with 1 run in the bottom of the 1st.  Then the Warriors continued to build the lead to grab the win and move onto the District Championship Saturday night 7 p.m. in Fairfield against IMS who beat Lone Tree 6-3 at Highland last night.  Travis Jones suffered the loss on the mound for the WMU Wolves, leading their hitting:  Darren Hunter, Kolt Rossiter and Garret Baker were all 2 for 3 at the plate.


The 2nd annual Mile Mile run is coming up August 3. A straight one mile dirt road course will be used, in case of mud a grass loop run will be held.

The event is located at: 2332   210TH ST. just outside of Mt. Pleasant Ia. And begins at

9:00 AM.  The event is a dirt road straight mile race. All proceeds go to the Mt Pleasant XC team. The race will be from Mile Ave on 210th to Nebraska Ave. It is a hard packed dirt farm field road.

Entry fees are $5 and there will not be any shirts. This is an old school race. Awards will be to male and female winners in Grade school, middle school, high school, college and open divisions.

The Columbus cross country team will hold two fund-raising runs at Chinkapin Bluffs Recreation Area in August. The first one will be Thursday, August 8, and the second will be Tuesday, August 13. The runs begin at 5:30 p.m. There will be a 3-mile run on the grass trail and a kids’ run on the gravel path. Entry fee is $5, which benefits the Columbus cross country team. Whitetails Unlimited is sponsoring the Mt. Pleasant Banquet on Thursday, September 19, at Manning Hall, 601 So. Jackson Street, Mt. Pleasant. This special event will feature a two-meat dinner, auction, and prizes with a wide array of products such as firearms, outfitter packages, hunting and outdoor related equipment, artwork, and collectibles only available at WTU events. Proceeds from this fundraising event will go toward projects that uphold WTU’s mission.

The social hour begins at 5:15 p.m. with dinner at 7:00 p.m. Tickets are $40 each, or $20 for a spouse or child. Ticket order deadline is August 29, and tickets will not be sold at the door.
