Fairfield had to come from behind to defeat the Mt. Pleasant Panthers in 4A Regional softball 8-4 in Fairfield last night.  In the previous 4 games between the two schools Fairfield had out scored the Panthers 41-0, so when M.P. jumped out to an early 2-0 lead in the bottom of the 1st inning it woke the Lady Trojans up. 

They answered in the 2nd inning with 4 runs, added 2 more in the 3rd and single runs in the 4th and 5th to build an 8-2 lead.  Mt. Pleasant didn’t give up they scored to runs in the bottom of the 7th but the comeback was snuffed out and the 2013 season came to an end with a record of 10 wins and 31 loses.  Cali Liechty suffered the loss in the circle relieved by Bailey Johnson.  Lelsie Taylor had 2 hits and scored twice, Sammi Goble had 3 hits, Kelsi Smith was 2 for 3.

Fairfield will now advance onto the Regional semi finals at Oskaloosa Saturday night at 7 p.m.

Pella beat Knoxville 4-1 and will play at Winterset in the other 4A Regional semi final.

Keokuk beat Ft. Madison in another 4A regional opener 7-5, the Lady Chiefs will now play at Washington against the Demons Saturday night.

 

Tonight New London will face Waco in the Class 1A Regional semi finals at Danville at 7 p.m. KILJ-FM 105.5 and kilj.com will carry the game live.

Tonight’s class 3A Regional softball action has Central Lee at #2 ranked West Burlington-Notre Dame and Centerville at Osceola Clarke.

 

The MPHS varsity baseball team traveled to Oskaloosa last night for a makeup game that was rained out earlier in the season, the Panthers defeated the Indians 14-3. Dustin Amos, Connor Shull and Alex Moore did the pitching.  Leading the hitting were:  Tyler Pace, Justin Chalupa and Carson Remick.

Monday night MPHS hosts Ft. Madison to wrap up the regular season and with a sweep would tie Fairfield for the league title.

OTHER AREA BASEBALL: Fairfield swept Ft. Madison 2-0 and 9-2, Washington swept Keokuk 4-1 and 10-2, Burlington beat Davenport Assumption twice 8-3 and 11-1, Van Buren beat IMS 14-5.

 

The Mt. Pleasant High School volleyball program is hosting a volleyball camp for 4-8th graders July 23-25 from 6pm-8pm at the high school.   For $30 and you get to learn many volleyball fundamentals and game competition, plus you get a t-shirt. Please stop by the Mt. Pleasant Park and Rec Department and pick up a form.

 

Iowa’s Oldest County Fair, the Lee County Fair, is set to host this Friday’s racing action at the Lee County Speedway in Donnellson, IA. The night will be highlighted by the  Sprint Invaders, also in action on the night will be the IMCA Modifides,  IMCA Sport Modifides, and the  IMCA Sport Compacts.

This will be the third and final appearance by the  Sprint Invaders for the 2013 season at the Lee County Speedway.

Gates will open at 5:30 pm, hot laps at 7:00 pm, with racing at 7:30 pm. Grandstand admissions are adults $15, students 7-17 $10, kids 6 & under FREE! Pit passes will be $30, ages 7-13 $15, and ages 6 & under $10.

Coming up this Saturday night at 34 Raceway, is the event late model fans have been waiting for when the UMP Summer Nationals Hell Tour makes its only Iowa stop at 34 Raceway. $10,000 is up for grabs with the best in late model racing taking on the challenge. As of July 5, Brandon Sheppard leads the point race for the UMP series followed by Bobby Pierce, Ryan Unzicker and Shannon Babb. Among area racers scheduled to compete include Chad Simpson, Chris Simpson, Brian Birkhofer, Mark Burgtorf,  and many others. Also scheduled will be the IMCA Sport Mods, 4 Cylinders and back for the second time this year 4 Wheelers and Pit Bikes.

Top qualifying NJCAA Division I Men’s Golf student-athletes from across the nation will be rolling into Burlington’s Spirit Hollow Golf Course to participate in the National Junior College Athletic Association (NJCAA) Division I Men’s Golf National Tournament May 13-16, 2014. More than 20 teams from community colleges across the nation will compete for team and individual titles.

The tournament travels across the country with colleges and golf courses vying to host the event every year. Southeastern Community College and Spirit Hollow Golf bid to host the tournament to the NJCAA in October, 2013 and were selected to host this prestigious event in 2014.

Spirit Hollow will host a Fall Championship Preview tournament in October at Spirit Hollow and a District Qualifier tournament in April, 2014. 

 

 

The Mt. Pleasant Hot Stix 12 and under softball team is headed to the Northern National 12 and under ASA softball tournament in Bloomington, Indiana July 25th thru 28th.  The Hot Stix finished as the champions in the 12 and under Class “B” state tournament recently to qualify for the nationals.  They are currently conducting a fund raising campaign to help finance the trip to Indiana, team representatives will be contacting local businesses and individuals to donate.

 

Whitetails Unlimited is sponsoring the Mt. Pleasant Banquet on Thursday, September 19, at Manning Hall, 601 So. Jackson Street, Mt. Pleasant. This special event will feature a two-meat dinner, auction, and prizes with a wide array of products such as firearms, outfitter packages, hunting and outdoor related equipment, artwork, and collectibles only available at WTU events. Proceeds from this fundraising event will go toward projects that uphold WTU’s mission.

The social hour begins at 5:15 p.m. with dinner at 7:00 p.m. Tickets are $40 each, or $20 for a spouse or child. Ticket order deadline is August 29, and tickets will not be sold at the door.

The Iowa High School Athletic Association has announced the baseball tournament pairings for class 1A and 2A.  The tournament opens July 13th for class 1A with Notre Dame playing Holy Trinity Catholic at Danville.  The winner plays Van Buren at Danville on July 16th.  Winfield Mt. Union/Waco plays Danville on the Bears home field July 16th at 7 p.m. with the winner playing on July 18th.  New London plays IMS at Highland at 5 p.m. on July 16th.

Class 2A has Mid Prairie playing Central Lee at Wapello on July 13th at 5 p.m. then at 7 p.m. West Burlington plays Columbus Community at that site.  The winners advance on to July 16th to face Wapello and Mediapolis who had first round byes.
