New London moved one step closer to qualifying for the State Summer Softball Championships by winning their Regional semi final game Friday night over Waco 11-0 at Danville. Morgan Christner pitched her 5th no hitter of the season to lead the Tigers defensively. She struck out 12 Waco batters on the way to her 28th victory of the season. Leading the Tiger hitting were: Tammy Koontz and Emily Parks who each had 2 hits. Waco ends the year with a record of 9 wins and 20 losses. New London improves to 29 and 9 and will play tonight at Pella Christian against 7th ranked Earlham who was a winner 11-1 over Twin Cedars in the other semi. KILJ-FM and kilj.com will carry the game live beginning at 7 p.m. The winner advances onto the State Softball Championships in Ft. Dodge beginning Monday July 22nd.
In Class 2A Regional play Friday night Highland defeated West Branch 10-2, Highland plays in the Regional final tonight at Iowa City West against Iowa City Regina.
Class 3A Regional Friday had West Burlington-Notre Dame beat Central Lee 7-0, the Falcons now play in the Regional final at Ottumwa tonight against Osceola Clarke.
Fairfield defeated Oskaloosa on the Indians home field Saturday night in Class 4A Regional semi final play by a score of 6-1. Trojans will play Winterset on their home field Tuesday night in the Regional finals, the winner goes onto state.
Washington beat Keokuk 4-3 in a 4A Regional semi final and will now play North Scott Tuesday night for a State Tournament Berth.
Notre Dame defeated Holy Trinity Catholic in Class 1A District baseball action at Danville Saturday night 12-2, Nikes will play Van Buren at Danville Tuesday night at 5 p.m. Winfield Mt. Union/Waco plays Danville in the second game of this double header at 7 p.m. with the winners playing on July 18th. New London plays IMS at Highland at 5 p.m. Tuesday.
Class 2A action saw Mid Prairie beat Central Lee 2-0 at Wapello Saturday night, West Burlington defeated Columbus Community 10-0 at that site in the 2nd game. Those winners advance on to 2nd round action Tuesday night, Mid Prairie plays Wapello at 7 p.m., preceded by West Burlington vs Mediapolis at 5 p.m. both games are at Wapello.
The UMP Summer Nationals Hell Tour made its only stop in Iowa Saturday night at 34 Raceway. $10,000 was up for grabs for the 26 cars competing in the series. Sixteen year old Bobby Pierce took the checkered flag ahead of Brian Birkhofer. Adam Shelman, Ames, picked up his first ever 34 Raceway win in the IMCA Sports Mods, Austen Becerra, Carthage, Il., would get the win in the 4 Cylinders, Tanner Gipple, New London, won the Pro Quad/4 Wheeler feature, Derek St. Clair, Donnellson won the Amateur Quad/4 Wheeler feature and Jody Steward would get the win in the Pit Bike feature.
Top qualifying NJCAA Division I Men’s Golf student-athletes from across the nation will be rolling into Burlington’s Spirit Hollow Golf Course to participate in the National Junior College Athletic Association (NJCAA) Division I Men’s Golf National Tournament May 13-16, 2014. More than 20 teams from community colleges across the nation will compete for team and individual titles.
The tournament travels across the country with colleges and golf courses vying to host the event every year. Southeastern Community College and Spirit Hollow Golf bid to host the tournament to the NJCAA in October, 2013 and were selected to host this prestigious event in 2014.
Spirit Hollow will host a Fall Championship Preview tournament in October at Spirit Hollow and a District Qualifier tournament in April, 2014.
The Mt. Pleasant Hot Stix 12 and under softball team is headed to the Northern National 12 and under ASA softball tournament in Bloomington, Indiana July 25th thru 28th. The Hot Stix finished as the champions in the 12 and under Class “B” state tournament recently to qualify for the nationals. They are currently conducting a fund raising campaign to help finance the trip to Indiana, team representatives will be contacting local businesses and individuals to donate.
Whitetails Unlimited is sponsoring the Mt. Pleasant Banquet on Thursday, September 19, at Manning Hall, 601 So. Jackson Street, Mt. Pleasant. This special event will feature a two-meat dinner, auction, and prizes with a wide array of products such as firearms, outfitter packages, hunting and outdoor related equipment, artwork, and collectibles only available at WTU events. Proceeds from this fundraising event will go toward projects that uphold WTU’s mission.
