Fairfield swept Mt. Pleasant in Southeast Conference softball and baseball Monday night in Fairfield.
The Lady Trojans scored 6-0 and 12-0 wins over the Panthers. Cali Leichty pitched the first game for the Panthers and Jena Stukerkurgen the 2nd. Morgan Fraise had a hit in each game to lead the offense. M.P. plays host to Centerville tonight in a makeup double header.
OTHER AREA SOFTBALL SCORES: Burlington split with Bettendorf, Grayhounds won the opener 4-3, Bulldogs won the nightcap 6-4.
Fairfield swept the baseball games by scores of 5-4 and 3-1. Dustin Amos pitched the first game and Connor Shull the 2nd. Austin Smith was 2-3 in the first game and Tyler Pace doubled in each game. The two Trojan wins moves them into 1st place in the Southeast Conference, Mt. Pleasant is off the rest of the week and will go to Keokuk for league play June 8th.
OTHER AREA BASEBALL SCORES: Bettendorf swept Burlington 4-3 and 4-1, Lone Tree rolled over Wapello 10-1, Mediapolis bombed Columbus 14-1, Ft. Madison took two from Keokuk 5-3 and 9-1, Winfield Mt. Union edged Highland 10-9, Notre Dame escaped West Burlington 5-4.
The Mt. Pleasant Hot Stix 12 and under softball team is headed to the Northern National 12 and under ASA softball tournament in Bloomington, Indiana July 25th thru 28th. The Hot Stix finished as the champions in the 12 and under Class “B” state tournament recently to qualify for the nationals. They are currently conducting a fund raising campaign to help finance the trip to Indiana, team representatives will be contacting local businesses and individuals to donate.
Rain forced the cancellation of racing action at 34 Raceway on Saturday, June 29 but race fans can look forward to some special upcoming events.
The Sprint Invaders 360 sprints will take to the track on Wednesday, July 3 for a re-scheduled May 25 rain out. Shoot for the Stars 360 sprint format will include a pit stop and fan interaction mid race. Mod Lites, 4 Cylinders and Vintage cars will add to the program with the Mod Lites and 4 Cylinders racing for track points. Stick around after the completion of the final race of the night for a huge fireworks display.
Coming up Saturday, July 6 will be KILJ Radio night with the popular $5 Fan Appreciation Night. Yes, that’s right, just $5.00 grandstand admission! 305 Sprints, IMCA , IMCA Sport Mods, IMCA Stock Cars, 4 Cylinders and Mod Lites will be in action competing for track points. And remember, kids 10 and under are admitted FREE.
The Iowa Girls High School Athletic Union has announced their tournament pairings for summer softball. In Class 4A Mt. Pleasant will open the tournament trail July 11th playing Fairfield on their home field at 7 p.m. The winner plays Oskaloosa at Osky on July 13th at 7 p.m. The other half of the regional has Knoxville at Pella, the winner playing at Winterset in the semis.
Class 1A has 11th ranked New London getting a 1st round bye and then playing July 10th at home against the winner of the Harmony at Moulton-Udell from July 8th. Winfield Mt. Union plays at Danville against the Bears on July 8th at 7 p.m. With the winner moving onto play at Waco against the Warriors on July 10th in the quarterfinals. In the other half of the regional: Moravia, Melcher Dallas, Grandview Park Baptist, Pleasantville, #13 Twin Cedars and #7 Earlham.
In Class 2A L&M plays at Wapello on July 9th, Van Buren is at Cardinal that same night.
Class 3A #1 ranked West Burlington-Notre Dame hosts Davis County on July 9th at 7 p.m. The winner advances to play the winner of the July 9th Mediapolis at Central Lee game on July 12th at West Burlington. The other half of the regional has Albia, Centerville, Chariton and Osceola Clarke.
Class 5A regional has Burlington at Ottumwa July 13th at 7 p.m. C.R. Kennedy, Iowa City West and Iowa City High make up the rest of the regional.
The Iowa High School Athletic Association has announced the baseball tournament pairings for class 1A and 2A. The tournament opens July 13th for class 1A with Notre Dame playing Holy Trinity Catholic at Danville. The winner plays Van Buren at Danville on July 16th. Winfield Mt. Union/Waco plays Danville on the Bears home field July 16th at 7 p.m. with the winner playing on July 18th. New London plays IMS at Highland at 5 p.m. on July 16th.
Class 2A has Mid Prairie playing Central Lee at Wapello on July 13th at 5 p.m. then at 7 p.m. West Burlington plays Columbus Community at that site. The winners advance on to July 16th to face Wapello and Mediapolis who had first round byes.
