New London 31-9 will battle in the Class 1A State Tournament semi finals today at 11:30 a.m. on diamond 2 at Harlan Rogers Field in Ft. Dodge against Newell Fonda a team that has a record of 36-6. KILJ-FM 105.5 and kilj.com will carry the game live. The Tigers will play Friday in the Class 1A Championship at 10 a.m. if they win and will be in the consolation championship Friday at 9:30 a.m. if they lose.
The other 1A semi final this morning will have #1 Akron Westfield against Don Bosco.
Van Buren High School won their substate championship baseball game Wednesday night 5-0 over Preston, that qualifies the Warriors for the State Baseball Championships at Principal Park in Des Moines. Van Buren 24-5 will play Don Bosco 28-6 at 8 p.m. Saturday night in the 1st round.
Other 1A qualifiers are: Mason City Newman, Woodbury Central, Twin Cedars, Martensdale St. Mary’s, Van Meter and Remsen St. Mary’s.
Since the scheduled demolition derby during the Van Buren County Fair (last Sunday night) was cancelled due to rain, the fair board has rescheduled it for this coming Saturday night, July 27, 2013. Van Buren County Fair Demolition Derby is rescheduled for Saturday, July 27, 2013 at 6 pm. Driver sign in & inspection will be 3-5 pm. Grandstand admission is adults, $10; Child 5-12 yrs., $5; and child under 5 yrs of age, free. Previously issued sponsor tickets (also the tickets you gave away) will be honored.
The hot and humid temperatures, plus the lightning in the area, didn’t slow down the action at the Lee County Speedway in Donnellson, IA. this past Friday. At the end of the evening Jeff Waterman in the IMCA, and Brandon Reu claimed their first wins of the season at the track, while Jason Cook IMCA Stock Cars, Tony Dunker IMCA SportMods, and Dustin Griffiths IMCA Hobby Stocks picked up wins in their respective classes.
Coming up this Friday night at the Lee County Speedway will be Hy-Vee of Fort Madison and Keokuk, and Miller Lite Night at the track. The 305 Sprints will make their final appearance of the season at the track, with a draw/redraw event. Also in action will be the IMCA Modifieds, IMCA Stock Cars, IMCA SportMods, IMCA Hobby Stocks, and IMCA Sport Compacts as they continue their close points battles.
Gates will open at 5:30 pm, hot laps at 7:00 pm, and racing at 7:30 pm. Grandstand admission will be adults $10, seniors $9, students 7-17 $5, and kids 6 & under FREE! Pit passes will be $25, ages 7-13 $15, and ages 6 & under $10.
Saturday night July 27 at 34 Raceway is Crazy Coyote Bike Nike with racing action including Super Late Models, IMCA Modifieds, IMCA Sport Mods, IMCA Stock Cars, 4 Cylinders and Mod Lites. All bikers will be admitted FREE with the agreement they will take a parade lap around the track at intermission on their bikes. (Bikers will need to stop by Crazy Coyote, Burlington, to receive your free admission ticket.
Grab your running shoes and beads and join the party at the 2013 Crooked Creek Days “Mardi Gras” Fun Run at 7:30am on Saturday, August 3. Events include a 5K Run & Walk and a 1 Mile Run & Walk.

Day of registration and check-in begin at 7:00am. All races will begin at 7:30am followed by an awards ceremony. The race start and finish will be at the Winfield School. The awards’ ceremony for overall male and female, and 1st and 2nd place in each age category, will follow.

The 2nd annual Mile Mile run is coming up August 3. A straight one mile dirt road course will be used, in case of mud a grass loop run will be held.
The event is located at: 2332 210TH ST. just outside of Mt. Pleasant Ia. And begins at
9:00 AM. The event is a dirt road straight mile race. All proceeds go to the Mt Pleasant XC team. The race will be from Mile Ave on 210th to Nebraska Ave. It is a hard packed dirt farm field road.
Entry fees are $5 and there will not be any shirts. This is an old school race. Awards will be to male and female winners in Grade school, middle school, high school, college and open divisions.

The Columbus cross country team will hold two fund-raising runs at Chinkapin Bluffs Recreation Area in August. The first one will be Thursday, August 8, and the second will be Tuesday, August 13. The runs begin at 5:30 p.m. There will be a 3-mile run on the grass trail and a kids’ run on the gravel path. Entry fee is $5, which benefits the Columbus cross country team. Southeast Iowa Regional Planning Commission is holding its annual golf outing (four person best shot) as a fundraiser for the Great River Housing Trust Fund. This event will be held at Flint Hills Municipal Golf Course in Burlington on Wednesday, September 25, 2013 with Registration and Buffet lunch at 11:00 am, and Tee Off at 12:15 p.m. The Cost is $50 per golfer and includes: Buffet Lunch, 18 holes of golf and cart; awards for top teams, and chances to bid on silent auction items. The Great River Housing Trust Fund promotes affordable housing in Southeast Iowa through owner-occupied rehabilitation, first time home buyer assistance, and development partnerships.
