Class 1A regional tournament softball begins tonight. 10th ranked New London gets a 1st round bye, will not play tonight but will play July 10th at home against the winner of the Harmony at Moulton-Udell game that will be played tonight. Winfield Mt. Union that has a 5-16 won-loss record plays at Danville against the Bears who are 5-20 tonight at 7 p.m. Earlier this season WMU beat Danville 9-3. KILJ-FM 105.5 and kilj.com will carry the action live. The winner of this matchup moves onto play at Waco against the Warriors on July 10th in the quarterfinals. In the other half of the regional: Moravia, Melcher Dallas, Grandview Park Baptist, Pleasantville, #13 Twin Cedars and #7 Earlham.
The MPHS softball team plays at Keokuk tonight in Southeast Conference action. The Panther baseball team also goes to Keokuk for two games. The Mt. Pleasant Community School District Board of Directors during their meeting tonight will approve Brent Broeker as an assistant varsity football coach, they also will approve his resignation from 7th grade basketball.
A great night of racing Saturday night July 6 saw a large crowd, 104 cars competing, some extremely close finishes and beautiful weather for the area’s race fans. Three of the six classes competing thrilled the fans with racers getting wins from mere inches to a ½ car length keeping the fans on the edge of their seats on KILJ Radio night. Race fans filed to the front stretch during intermission for a driver autograph session with racecars and drivers lining the front stretch. Three drivers raced to their first wins of the season. Kyle Hill, New London (sport mods), Brent Hartley, Niota, Il. (4 cylindes) and Jayson Ditsworth, Gladstone, Il (305 Sprints). Mitch Morris, Eldridge (modifieds), Tom Bowling, Danville (stock cars) and Evan Epperson, Muscatine (mod lites) all made return trips to the winners circle.
Coming up this week, Saturday, July 13, is the event late model fans have been waiting for when the UMP Summer Nationals Hell Tour makes its only Iowa stop at 34 Raceway. $10,000 is up for grabs with the best in late model racing taking on the challenge. As of July 5, Brandon Sheppard leads the point race for the UMP series followed by Bobby Pierce, Ryan Unzicker and Shannon Babb. Among area racers scheduled to compete include Chad Simpson, Chris Simpson, Brian Birkhofer, Mark Burgtorf, and many others. Also scheduled will be the IMCA Sport Mods, 4 Cylinders and back for the second time this year 4 Wheelers and Pit Bikes.

The Mt. Pleasant Hot Stix 12 and under softball team is headed to the Northern National 12 and under ASA softball tournament in Bloomington, Indiana July 25th thru 28th. The Hot Stix finished as the champions in the 12 and under Class “B” state tournament recently to qualify for the nationals. They are currently conducting a fund raising campaign to help finance the trip to Indiana, team representatives will be contacting local businesses and individuals to donate.
