Verena Buffington

Verena Buffington went home to be with the Lord _Thursday, August 29, 2013 at Sunrise Terrace Care Center in Winfield. She was born September 21, 1914 in Morning sun, Iowa to William Alexander Thompson and Emily McKinley Thompson. She had 3 brothers and 3 sisters; all are deceased.
On June 12, 1938 she married Gerald Buffington who died March 12, 2006. They lived on the farm in rural Columbus Junction all their lives.
They had 5 children, Maribeth (Richard) Nelson of Davenport, Phillip (Robyn) of Mt. Union, Phyllis (Larry) Close of Zimmerman, MN, Tony (Cindy) of Winfield, and Chris (Marcia) on the family farm.
Her life was centered on her family and Spring Run Church. She was an avid gardener canning enough vegetables and fruits to feed her family.
She enjoyed playing the piano and organ and was organist at the church. She enjoyed teaching Bible lessons to her children and the adults Sunday school.
She was active in the Women’s Group at Spring Run Church insisting there be running water in the kitchen to cook for the chicken suppers and the ice cream socials; and encouraging the building of an addition for a new kitchen. She also served on the District and Conference levels of United Methodist Women.

She was loved by her 14 grandchildren and 26 great-grandchildren:
Funeral services will be Tuesday September 3, 2013 at 10:30 a.m. at the Spring Run United Methodist Church, with Pastor Randy Whitsel officiating. Interment will be in the Columbus City Cemetery. Friends may call on Monday from 2-7:00 p.m. at the Honts Funeral Home in Winfield, where the family will meet with friends from 5-7:00 p.m. In Lieu of flowers, a memorial has been established for the Spring Run United Methodist Church.
