Volleyball scores from Thursday night. #1 ranked Holy Trinity Catholic defeated Cardinal of Eldon 25-2, 25-10, 25-7. Nicole Wilkens had 7 ace serves, Mikaela Foecke had 8 kills. #9 Winfield Mt. Union defeated Pekin 2-0 and West Burlington 2-0. Emily Mathews and Megan Escher each had 8 kills and 5 blocks. Shelby Therme served up 6 aces. #14 Mediapolis defeated Columbus Community 3-0 and L&M 3-0. Darby Massner had 41 assists and served 22 aces on the night. Heidi Hillyard had 22 kills. Burlington won over Keokuk 3 games to none.
The MPHS volleyball team opens their season at the Osceola Clarke tournament tomorrow, this will be the first matches under the direction of new head coach Jeff Schulz.
Iowa Wesleyan College cross country teams will run at Mt. Mercy today. Tomorrow the Tiger men’s soccer teams host Culver Stockton. The Wesleyan volleyball team plays at the Monmouth College Invitational tomorrow.
Ft. Madison won the Keokuk Cross Country Invitational, the girls won with a score of 30 and the boys with 20 points. The Bloodhounds Kaylee Alvarez won the girls division and Nick Guzman won the boys.
The cross country ranking have been released. The Ft. Madison girls are ranked 11th in class 3A, Class 2A has Mediapolis ranked 11th. In the boys polls, Burlington is 10th in 4A, Ft. Madison is 7th in class 3A.
Mt. Pleasant defeated Marion in Freshman football 30-20 on Evans Field last night. Brock Wilson was 5 of 7 passing with touchdown passes to Zach Ebling and Pat Canby. Wilson and Canby each ran for scores also. Defensively Deshondric Foster, Trey Cosgrove, Pat Canby and Zach Ebling led the tackling. Levi Parkevich grabbed an interception.
Mt. Pleasant travels to Marion tonight to open the 2013 football season. The sophomore game will begin at 6 p.m. followed by the varsity which will start 35 minutes after the sophomore game ends. KILJ will be broadcasting with our pregame show starting at 6:45 p.m. M.P. has a new head coach, Shawn Striegel takes over for the retired Bob Jensen, Striegel had been an assistant for Panthers and before that coached at Tri County High School as head coach. The Panthers are coming off a season where their record was 2-7 and suffered a 70-7 loss to Marion in the season opener last year.

You’ll be hanging on to your seats tonight at 34 Raceway in West Burlington when the USAC Non-Wing 410 Sprints will be taking on the 3/8 high banked track.
Its only their second stop in Iowa this season.
Also on the program will be the sprints and the IMCA Sport Mods. Pit-Passes: are $35.
Adult Grandstand Admission $25.00, Seniors $23.00, Students $13.00, Kids 10 and under free.
Pit gates open at 3:00, Grandstands at 5, Hot Laps start at 6:30, Qualifying begins at 7.

The Mt. Pleasant Rec Department has several programs that have registration going on now. 1st thru 6th grade flag football program is for girls and boys, games will be played in September and October on Saturdays at East lake Park. Registration ends August 30th, fee is $20 for resident and $25 for non-resident. Practices will begin early in September.
The Kindergarten flag Football program registration ends September 6th. The program will be held on Tuesdays from 5:30-6:15 for four weeks September 17th thru October 8th.
Registration for the Panther basketball camp for girls and boys in grades 3 thru 6 ends September 6th. The program will be held September 9th thru 12th from 6-7 p.m. in Cottrell Gym.
You may also register now thru September 6th for Panther Cheerleading Camp for k thru 5th graders, it will be held Tuesdays September 17th and 24th, October 1st and 8th from 6:15-7 p.m. at Cottrell Gym.
The IWC men’s and women’s basketball 2013 golf outing is coming up on September 20th at 11 a.m. at the Mt. Pleasant Golf and Country Club. This is a 4 person best shot tournament to benefit the IWC basketball programs. Cost is $70 per golfer, and that includes dinner. There will be various contests and games for golfers to win nice prizes like grills, professional game tickets, golf equipment and other items. If you would like to participate sign up by September 14th with Kurt Moon at Brown’s Shoe Fit in Mt. Pleasant or call 385-2931. There are also opportunities for hole sponsors, and raffles prize donations.
Southeast Iowa Regional Planning Commission is holding its annual golf outing (four person best shot) as a fundraiser for the Great River Housing Trust Fund. This event will be held at Flint Hills Municipal Golf Course in Burlington on Wednesday, September 25, 2013 with Registration and Buffet lunch at 11:00 am, and Tee Off at 12:15 p.m. The Cost is $50 per golfer and includes: Buffet Lunch, 18 holes of golf and cart; awards for top teams, and chances to bid on silent auction items. The Great River Housing Trust Fund promotes affordable housing in Southeast Iowa through owner-occupied rehabilitation, first time home buyer assistance, and development partnerships. Whitetails Unlimited is sponsoring the Mt. Pleasant Banquet on Thursday, September 19, at Manning Hall, 601 So. Jackson Street, Mt. Pleasant. This special event will feature a two-meat dinner, auction, and prizes with a wide array of products such as firearms, outfitter packages, hunting and outdoor related equipment, artwork, and collectibles only available at WTU events. Proceeds from this fundraising event will go toward projects that uphold WTU’s mission.
