The U.S. Girls Youth National Volleyball Team which was led by Mikaela Foecke of Holy Trinity High School in Ft. Madison just missed winning the gold medal recently in Thailand and they made some volleyball history.
The U18 Americans finished with a silver medal after bowing to China 25-16, 25-21, 25-23 in the finals of the World Championships. Both teams finished with 5-2 records.
It was the first world championship volleyball medal ever won by either a U.S. boys or girls team at the youth or junior level. The girls had finished fourth in 2003 and 2005.
Mikaela Foecke of Holy Trinity High School and Molly Haggerty of Glen Ellyn, Ill., led the U.S. against China with nine points each.


The Mt. Pleasant Community Schools Football Camp begins today and runs through Friday.

High School (grades 9-12) –  are to Report @ 7:30 am.  Camp will run from 8 am – 11 am.

Middle School (grades 7-8) please Report @ 1:15 pm.  Camp will run from 1:30 pm – 3:30 pm.

If you have completed sports physicals, consent forms, and concussion forms, bring those to turn in to your coach during camp.


There is a 5th and 6th Grade Panther Football “Training Camp”.
going this week and next for all players planning to sign up for the 5th/6th grade Mt. Pleasant Tackle Football League.
Cardio/Plyo workouts will be followed by various football drills.
This is a free program designed to get focus back on football season.
The camp is held at Schaeffer Park on South Walnut Street  in Mt. Pleasant, players are urged to wear shirts/shorts and cleats.

Coming up this Saturday at 34 Raceway the Late Models will return as well as the IMCA Modifieds, Sport Mods and 4 Cylinders.  A driver’s on track autograph session will be held during intermission.


The Columbus cross country team will hold two fund-raising runs at Chinkapin Bluffs Recreation Area in August. The first one will be Thursday, August 8, and the second will be Tuesday, August 13. The runs begin at 5:30 p.m. There will be a 3-mile run on the grass trail and a kids’ run on the gravel path. Entry fee is $5, which benefits the Columbus cross country team. Southeast Iowa Regional Planning Commission is holding its annual golf outing (four person best shot) as a fundraiser for the Great River Housing Trust Fund. This event will be held at Flint Hills Municipal Golf Course in Burlington on Wednesday, September 25, 2013 with Registration and Buffet lunch at 11:00 am, and Tee Off at 12:15 p.m. The Cost is $50 per golfer and includes: Buffet Lunch, 18 holes of golf and cart; awards for top teams, and chances to bid on silent auction items. The Great River Housing Trust Fund promotes affordable housing in Southeast Iowa through owner-occupied rehabilitation, first time home buyer assistance, and development partnerships. Whitetails Unlimited is sponsoring the Mt. Pleasant Banquet on Thursday, September 19, at Manning Hall, 601 So. Jackson Street, Mt. Pleasant. This special event will feature a two-meat dinner, auction, and prizes with a wide array of products such as firearms, outfitter packages, hunting and outdoor related equipment, artwork, and collectibles only available at WTU events. Proceeds from this fundraising event will go toward projects that uphold WTU’s mission.

The social hour begins at 5:15 p.m. with dinner at 7:00 p.m. Tickets are $40 each, or $20 for a spouse or child. Ticket order deadline is August 29, and tickets will not be sold at the door.
