— Dave Helman, recently retired chair of the Henry County Democrats, has been named to the Second District Democrats’ Hall of Fame, receiving recognition as Outstanding County Chair by the Second District Democrats Central Committee. Helman is a resident of Salem, in Henry County; he was chair of the Henry County Democrats for nine years, from 2004 to 2013.
The Hall of Fame Awards Program is an annual recognition; the award was given to Mr. Helman in appreciation of his outstanding service as county chair; he was chosen out of the 24 counties in the District. Dave will receive his award at the Hall of Fame dinner, held in Ottumwa on September 21, 2013.
Chair of the Second District Democrats, Alan Bohanan, noted some of the reasons for the award: “Dave has been an energetic and important contributor to the party during his tenure as Henry County chair, at the county, state, and even national level. He hosted the District Convention in 2006, and has organized and moderated many forums, workshops and public presentations. And, we have seen a growth in the support for Democratic candidates in the County – leading to 4 of the precincts supporting our President and Second District Congressman Dave Loebsack in the 2012 election. Although Henry County is one of our smallest counties, the county organization in Henry County is one of the strongest in the District.”
Commenting on the award, Mr. Helman said “I am delighted and honored to receive this award, but I can only say thank you for the wonderful experience working with the Democratic Party here in Iowa. As the first state in the primaries, and a swing state in the national elections, I have had the opportunity to meet amazing number of people important to our nation’s future. It has been a special pleasure to get to know Tom Vilsack, former mayor of Mt. Pleasant, governor of Iowa, and now Secretary of Agriculture. And, of course, it has meant a lot to be part of our Congressman Dave Loebsack’s successful campaigns.” Although retired as Democratic Chair in Henry County, Mr. Helman remains active in the party, continuing to head the Loebsack campaign for Henry County, as well as being active in the community: he is a member of the Governmental Affairs Committee of the Chamber of Commerce, Chair of the Henry County Board of Adjustment, and Chair of the Henry/Washington County Early Childhood Iowa Board of Directors.
