Visit with IDNR forestry professionals and ISU Extension Forestry Specialists at the annual Shimek State Forest Field day on October 1, 2013. During concurrent sessions in the morning, foresters will discuss pre-commercial biomass thinning trials on the forest, the impacts to soil and soil processes of the thinnings, and the impacts to game and non-game wildlife. In the afternoon, attendees will learn about the featured tree – Red Oak. There will be updates about the latest insect (emerald ash borer, Asian longhorned beetle, etc) and the regulations that are sure to follow the new EAB finds in SE Iowa. Finally, we will update participants about timber sales and how to start the process.
Refreshments and registration will begin at 8:30AM with the program to begin at 9:00AM at the White oak campground in the Donnellson Unit of the Shimek State Forest. Look for forestry field day signs at the intersection of J56 and 118th.
You must RSVP by calling the Lee County Extension Office at 319-835-5116 by Tuesday, September 27th to guarantee your meal! The cost of the field day is $15. Participants should dress for outdoor conditions.
