Mt. Pleasant Man Dies in Accident Near Ft. Madison

The Lee County Sheriff’s Office responded to a motor vehicle accident involving one vehicle on Sunday, September 1st, 2013 at 8:01 p.m. The accident occurred in the 2800 block of County Road 103, approximately one mile northwest of Fort Madison, Iowa.

Jonathan Wayne Selby, age 20, of 709 S. Main St., Apt. 206, Mount Pleasant, Iowa, was driving westbound on County Road 103. Megan E. Gonzalez, age 18, of the same address as Selby, was a front seat passenger in the vehicle. Christopher James Hines, age 33, of 3710 SE 14th St, Apt. 23, Des Moines, Iowa was a rear seat passenger.

The driver was distracted and the vehicle left the roadway, rolling several times before coming to rest. Jonathan W. Selby and Christopher J. Hines were ejected from the vehicle.

Jonathan W. Selby sustained severe injuries and was flown to Blessing Hospital in Quincy, Illinois, where he later died from the injuries sustained in the accident. He was not wearing a safety restraint system.

Megan Gonzalez was wearing a safety restraint system and was uninjured. She was transported from the accident scene by private vehicle.

The Iowa State Patrol, Lee County EMS Ambulance, Air Evac and West Point Fire and Rescue assisted at the scene. The accident remains under investigation.
