Dorothy M. Van Dyke, age 96, formerly of Winfield, died Sunday September 15, 2013 in Cedar Falls, where she had resided since 2004. The daughter of Henry and Blanche (Martin) Moody, she was born April 19, 1917 near Winfield. On June 9, 1937 she married Charles Van Dyke who preceded her in death on January 9, 2004. She was a 1935 graduate of the Winfield High School and then taught in a rural school for two years. She was an active member of the Winfield United Methodist Church for over 70 years where she was secretary for 11 years. She also served on the Winfield Library board and Sunrise Terrace board. She was a member of T.T.T. chapter P and the V.F.W. auxiliary; She and her husband hosted two foreign exchange students from Bolivia, Bergman (Chacho) Barba in 1964-65 and then his sister Roxanna in 1978-79. They visited them in their home in 1969. Dorothy enjoyed traveling, spending 18 years wintering in Arizona. She also enjoyed playing cards and reading.
Survivors include: one son Gary Van Dyke of Galesburg, Illinois; one daughter Julie and Ed Rathmell of Cedar Falls; 8 grandchildren 22 great grandchildren and 11 great-great grandchildren. She was preceded in death by her parents, husband and one sister.
The funeral service will be Saturday September 21, 2013 at 11:00 a.m. at the Winfield United Methodist Church, with Rev. Randy Moser officiating. Interment will follow at the Winfield-Scott Township Cemetery. The family will greet friends one hour prior to the service at the church. Memorials have been established for the Winfield United Methodist Church and the American Cancer Society. Honts Funeral Home in Winfield is in charge of the arrangements.
