Francis A. Garrels, 65, of Rural Birmingham died at 7:40 A.M. September 26, 2013 at Jefferson County Health Center, Fairfield
He was born Aug. 27, 1948 at Linby, IA to Howard and Blanche Echelberry Garrels and married Diane Weir. They later divorced. He married Marilyn Murphy on Nov. 28, 1969 in Silvis, IL.
Francis grew up in Eldon and later moved to the farm in rural Birmingham. He worked at Rock Island Railroad for 9 years in Drakesville as a section gang foreman, at Ralston Purina in Ottumwa, and later attended school and became a Registered Nurse and worked for the correctional facility in Mt. Pleasant. He was a member of Keosauqua Masonic Lodge No. 10 A. F. & A. M., Eldon Lions Club and First Baptist Church in Eldon.
Surviving are his wife Marilyn, 2 sons, Timothy Garrels (Diana) of Eldon, Jim Garrels (Julie) of Troy, 2 daughters, Kimberly Chickering (Tony) of Eldon and Christine Padavich (Larry) of Ottumwa, 8 grandchildren, a great-grandchild, 3 brothers, Junior Garrels, Tom Myers and Wayne Higdon(Tina) all of Eldon.
He was preceded in death by his parents and a sister, Barbara Moore
Graveside services will be at 11 A.M. Monday September 30, 2013 at Iowaville Cemetery, west of Selma, Pastor David Albert officiating. Visitation will be open from 9:30 to 10:30 at Pedrick Funeral Home, Douds before processing to the cemetery. .
