The Iowa Wesleyan Tigers men’s golf team took part in a unique tournament on Tuesday at the Blue Ridge Golf Course in Riverside, Iowa. The Tigers played in the Mt. Mercy 36 hole tournament.
The Tigers shot their best team round of the year, shooting a team score of 642 on the day. It was a tough field, as the Tigers finished sixth overall out of six teams, falling just one stroke behind Viterbo University.
Mt. Mercy University won the tournament with a 599, two strokes ahead of runner-up Grand View University.
Tanner Travis led Iowa Wesleyan, finishing in a tie for 13th overall. Travis was consistent as he shot 76 on the first 18 holes, following that up with a solid 77 on the last 18.
Trent Hoekstra finished 20th overall for the Tigers, shooting back-to-back 81′s. Blake Mitchell had a rough first 18, shooting an 87 on the first half. He bounced back with a 76 on the last 18 to finish one spot back of Hoekstra in 21st.
The Iowa Wesleyan College Tigers football team hosted their first UMAC game in school history last Saturday, the Tigers did not disappoint as they came out of the gate ready to play. Wesleyan pounced on the University of Minnesota-Morris Cougars early, but in the end fell short and suffered a 42-21 loss to the Cougars.
IWC struck twice to start the second quarter. Raul Becerril scored on a 29-yard run just eight seconds into the second quarter to put the Tigers back on top. Zandro Diaz then connected with Ridge Hobbs for a 56-yard touchdown pass with 12:03 remaining in the first half to take a 17-10 lead over the visiting Cougars.
The Tiger offense played strong, as they recorded 459 yards of total offense (329 passing, 130 rushing).
LiMichael Peeples led the Tigers’ receivers with seven receptions for 119 yards and one touchdown.
Becerril also played strong offensively, recording 46 yards on two rushes and a score and also catching four passes for 47 yards in the game.
Raul Lozano was a monster on the defense for the Tigers, recording 10 solo tackles and assisting on another. He also broke up a pass and blocked a Cougars’ extra point attempt.
The Tigers return to action on Saturday, September 28 when they head to MacMurray College. Kickoff is set for 1:00pm in Jacksonville, Ill.
The Southeast Iowa Super Conference volleyball tournament has first round action tonight at various sites, the final rounds, championship and consolation will be Saturday at Southeastern Community College.

Cassandra Stuflick former Danville High School runner and now a freshman on the Clarke University of Dubuque cross country team was named the Midwest Conference women’s cross country runner of the week. She finished 135th out of 255 runners at the National Catholic Invite hosted by Notre Dame University.
Brad Vogel former Central Lee Hawk and now a senior at Simpson College was named the Iowa Intercollegiate Athletic Conference offensive football player of the week. Vogel caught 8 passes for 115 yards and 1 76 yard touchdown in the Storms 35-34 win over Wisconsin River Falls last Saturday. Vogel ranks high in many offensive statistics in the conference and has helped his team to a 2-1 record.
