Glenwood H.J. Long

Glenwood H.J. Long, 93, of Riverview Hills Village in Keokuk, Iowa, formerly of Donnellson, Iowa passed away Sunday, October 13, 2013 at 2:45 a.m. Born September 29, 1920 in Clarence, Missouri, the son of G. Edward and Minnie Viola (Rennaker) Long.
He was married in Seattle, Washington, June 10, 1945 to Florence Lucille Schlicher Long. She survives. Also surviving are son Michael (Lee Ann) Long of Macomb, Illinois, daughter, Miriam (David) Grimes of Keokuk, Iowa, granddaughters, Michele Long, of Macomb, Melissa Long, of Hannibal, Missouri, Jennifer (Steve) Grimes Wright, of Greenfield, Wisconsin, and Kristin Grimes, of Shawnee, Oklahoma; great grandsons, Elijah, Silas, Ezekiel, and Malachi Wright, of Greenfield, Wisconsin; niece, Donna (Bruce) Merschman Sallaz, of Moline, Illinois.
He was preceded in death by his parents, sister, Marie Long, sister, Nola (Hank) Merschman, daughter, Muriel Rae Long, and great-granddaughter, Erica Grimes.
Glenwood moved to Iowa, where his family farmed in the Green Bay Bottom area near Wever as well as near Donnellson, until he entered the Navy. He served from August 10, 1942 to November 21, 1945, in the U.S. Navy during WWII as Machinist Mate First Class aboard the USS Calvert during the invasion of Africa, Leyte, Marshall Islands, and the Solomons, including Kwajalein and Mindosa.
After the war ended, Glenwood, using the skills he learned in the Navy, went to work at Ben Schlicher Plumbing and Heating, in Donnellson. He and Florence later owned and operated the business for many years.
Glenwood was a member of the St. Paul’s United Church of Christ in Donnellson. He was a sixty-eight year active member of the American Legion Post 474, sixty-six year member of the George Washington Masonic Lodge, and a sixty-two year member of the Order of Eastern Star, all of Donnellson.
He provided most of the work building homes for his children. He also thoroughly enjoyed traveling anywhere the opportunity offered. He and Florence attended many Legion Department and National Conventions with the last one being in 2011.
Friends may may call between 12 noon and 7 p.m., Friday, October 18, 2013 at the Schmitz-Lynk Funeral Home in Donnellson. Cremation rites have been accorded. A private family memorial service will be held at the Schmitz-Lynk Funeral Home in Donnellson with Pastor Alice Hawes officiating. Interment of ashes will take place at the Evangelical Cemetery in Donnellson. In lieu of flowers, the family requests memorials to be made to St. Paul’s United Church of Christ or the Donnellson Library Building Fund.
