Former Iowa First Lady Christie Vilsack presented the Union Block project with a check for $40,000 this morning. Vilsack, whose husband Tom is the U.S. Secretary of Agriculture, also toured the building located on the north side of the Mt. Pleasant square. She said the money was from her Vilsack Foundation, which she is closing out. She felt the project was worthy of the donation and hopes the young people of Mt. Pleasant will learn more about the community’s history. The first woman to ever pass the U.S. bar studied at the Union Block…Belle Bab Mansfield.
