Mt. Vernon swept Mediapolis in the Class 3A Regional Finals volleyball match played at West Liberty last night.  The Mustangs rolled in the 1st game 25-12, Mediapolis played better in game two but fell 25-16, game three saw the Bullettes really challenge the 8th ranked Mustangs but a late game 7 point run switched the momentum and Mt. Vernon won 25-20 and goes to the State Volleyball championships next week in Cedar Rapids with a 25-10 record and will tangle Tuesday night at 6 p.m. with Sheldon.  Other 3A qualifiers were:  Independence, Floyd Valley, Nevada, Union, Red Oak and Carroll Kuemper Catholic.

Class 4A State Meet Qualifiers:  Charles City, Waverly-Shell Rock, LeMars, Harlan, Davenport Assumption, West Delaware, Indianola and Solon.

Class 5A Qualifiers:  Dowling Catholic, Ankeny, Pleasant Valley, Urbandale, Johnston, Ankeny Centennial, Dubuque Hempstead and Bettendorf.


Tonight Class 1A Regional finals will be decided.  KILJ-FM 105.5 and will carry live the #12 ranked Winfield Mt. Union Wolves against the #1 ranked Holy trinity Catholic Crusaders at 7 p.m. from Panther Gymnasium at Mt. Pleasant High School.

The #3 ranked New London Tigers are 1 win away from going to state, they play Springville at Iowa City West high School.  KILJ will keep you posted on the scores during our broadcast of the WMU vs HTC match.  



The Mt. Pleasant Middle School 8th grade girl’s basketball team opened their season at Keokuk.

The MP 7th Grade A, B, and C boys basketball teams were victorious last night in their home opener against the Keokuk Chiefs. 

In the A game the Panthers won 42-12.  High scorers were Rhett Zeglen 14, Jacob Stukerjurgen 9, and Samuel Beatty 6.  In the B game the Panthers won 19-8.  High scorers were Riley McQuiggin 6 and David Blancas 5.  And in the C game the Panthers won 23-12.  High scorer was Charles Chapman with 7 pts. 


Southeastern Community College men defeated Carl Sandburg 102-79.


Former Mt. Pleasant head football coach Bob Jensen will receive the Walt Fiegel Coaching with Character Award Presented at the halftime of the Class 4A football Championship game, Friday, November 22. This award was created in 2003 after the death of Sioux City East Coach Walt Fiegel who was also the Executive Director of the Iowa Football Coaches Association.  It honors an individual who embodies the high character, integrity, concern for kids, and service to the profession that were modeled by Coach Fiegel.

Coach Jensen ended a 24-year football career at Mount Pleasant. He retired with a record of 159-77. He gave 40 years to the profession, embodying the qualities of service to the kids, the school and community, and the coaching profession. He graduated from Harlan where he excelled in football before earning his degree at the University of Northern Iowa in 1973. His career started at Central, Elkader as a teacher and assistant coach for one season before moving to Mount Pleasant, where he was an assistant to Hall-of-Fame Coach Bob Evans. In 1989 he became the head coach and for 24 seasons directed the Panthers to 12 playoff appearances, including three semifinal round games. His 1990, 1993, 1999 and 2008 teams completed the regular season undefeated. Eight of his teams won conference or district titles. He was named Class 3A Coach-of-the-Year in 1990 and in 2004 he was inducted into the Iowa Football Coaches Association Coaches Hall of Fame. He served as the IFCA President in 2006 and 2007. He taught exercise science at Mount Pleasant until 1998 when he assumed the position of activities director retiring in 2013.


Iowa Wesleyan College for the 7th year in a row will host the Iowa Wesleyan College High School girls basketball jamboree.  The event will be held in the IWC Gym on November 19th beginning at 6 p.m.

Iowa Wesleyan College is going to be hosting a boy’s basketball youth skills camp this fall in Ruble Arena.  It’s for boys in grades 3rd thru 8th, and will be held November 8th beginning at 8:30 a.m.  Camp will go until 11:30.  Cost of the camp is $25 and that includes a t-shirt, please sign up by November 1st. 

On November 9th a boy’s basketball skills tune up camp will be held in Ruble arena for boys in grades 7 thru 12.  Registration begins at 1:30 p.m. and camp will run from 2-5.  Cost is $25 which includes a t-shirt.
