Thelma Estella Brown Crist 97, of Morning Sun, Iowa died on Thursday, December 26, 2013 at the Morning Sun Care Center.

Mrs. Crist was born on April 14, 1916 in Yarmouth, IA.She was the daughter of Benton J. Brown and Susie Melvina Peckham Brown. Mrs. Crist graduated from Yarmouth High School in 1934 and married Charles Weldon Crist in October of 1934.

The community of Morning Sun, IA was home to Mrs. Crist throughout her adult life. She was an employee of Nichol’s Produce before becoming secretary/bookkeeper at the Morning Sun Grain Company. She worked as an employee of the Minnis’ family until her retirement from the grain company in 1984.

Mrs. Crist was,among other things, a dedicated employee; member of the Morning Sun Methodist Church and the TT Club.During her younger years she loved to garden, dance, shopflea markets, collect teapotsand was an avid card player. She was a loving mother, grandmother, great-grandmother and was fiercely loyal to her family.

She was preceded in death by her parents, her husband, C. Weldon(Weldy)Crist, a brother Carl Brown and her only child, Janice Lee Crist Johnson. She is survived by her grandchildren; Wayne Johnson of West Burlington, IA, Scott and Julia Johnson of West Des Moines, IA, Cristy and Michael Schmidt of Burlington, IA, Jay and Mindy Johnson of West Burlington, IA, 5 great grandchildren; Nathan Schmidt, Jackie Johnson, Ross Johnson, Graham Johnson, Jamie Johnson, a brother-in-law,Verle Crist of Cibolo TX, a sister-in-law Betty Crist of Burlington, IA, a niece Carol (Jim)Fruehling of St. Paul MN,and 6 nephewsDale (Jane)Brown of Denver, CO, Randy Crist of Bastrop, TX, Barry Crist (Suzanne), McQueeney, TX, Raymond Crist of Bastrop, TX, Doug (Cindy) Crist of Burlington, IA and Chuck (Elizabeth) Crist of Austin, TX.

“Nanny”, as Mrs. Crist was known toher family, was blessed with a supportive and caring circle of friends in her community of Morning Sun. Janet Hall was Nanny’s special care provider and an outstanding friend to her during her residency in the Morning Sun Care Center.

A visitation, with family members, will be held Saturday, January 4, 2014from 9:30-10:30 a.m. at the Methodist Church in Morning Sun, IA. There will be no calling hours at the funeral home. The funeral services for Thelma E. Crist will be held Saturday, January 4, 2014 at 10:30 a.m. at the United Methodist Church in Morning Sun, IA. Interment will follow at the Conesville Cemetery in Conesville, IA.

The family requests, in lieu of flowers, donations be made to the Morning Sun Methodist Church or the Morning Sun Community Center.
