Mt. Pleasant had too many turnovers and not enough 3 point field goals in their loss Monday night at home against Williamsburg 45-38.  The Panthers committed over 20 turnovers again handling the ball against the 7th ranked class 3A team, and hit just one 3 point field goal in 15 tries.  M.P. did hold a 12 point lead late in the 3rd quarter but the Raiders scored 5 unanswered points to end that period and then outscored the Panthers 25-11 in the final 8 minutes to improve their record to 3-0 while MPHS is 1-2 and getting ready to begin conference play at home Friday against Fairfield.  Taryne Shull scored 9 points to lead the Panther scoring, Hannah Becker added 8, Mary Wester had 6 points and 8 rebounds .  Paige Greiner a Drake University recruit led Williamsburg with 18 points.

Williamsburg won the JV game 32-29 and Mt. Pleasant easily won the freshman game.

Coach Paul Rundquist and the Mt. Pleasant Panthers boy’s basketball team open up the 2013-2014 season tonight at home against Cedar Rapids Xavier.  Both teams may be a little rough around the edges for different reasons.  Mt. Pleasant will have a lot of new faces on the floor that have not seen all that much varsity action.  Xavier will be a little rusty because some of their key players were on the football team that made it all the way to the championship game in Class 4A losing to Des Moines Dowling, so their basketball practice time has been cut short.

M.P. had a 19-6 record last season and made an appearance in the State Tournament.  Gone are the leading scorers Faith Pope and Ryan Hanna who together accounted for 27 points a game.  Returning leading scorers are Trey Magnani and Zach Mulford that each averaged 3 points per game.  KILJ-FM 105.5 and kilj.com will broadcast tonight’s game beginning at 7:30 p.m.
