The #15th ranked Mt. Pleasant Panthers girls basketball team will be competing in Region #4 in the Class 4A tournaments announced Monday by the Iowa Girls High School Athletic Union.  Mt. Pleasant drew a first round bye and will play February 22nd at home against the winner of the February 19th battle between Keokuk and Ft.  Madison.   A win would put M.P. in the Regional final at Washington against Davenport North, Clear Creek-Amana or #5 ranked Davenport Assumption who battle in the other bracket.

Class 3A 4th ranked Mediapolis will open up tournament play at home February 15th against L&M in Regional #6, with a win they would advance to host either Central Lee or Mid Prairie who meet at Central Lee in the first round.  #12 ranked Camanche is in the bottom bracket of the Regional along with West Liberty, Northeast Goose Lake and Tipton.

Class 2A Region #5 has Danville hosting West Burlington on February 15th and Wapello hosting Columbus Community that night.  #10 ranked Iowa City Regina would play the Wapello-Columbus winner on the 18th of February.  The Danville vs West Burlington winner would go to Highland that night.

Class 1A Region #4 has 12th ranked Winfield Mt. Union getting a first round bye, they would host the winner of the Keota vs lone Tree game in the 2nd round February 18th.  #2 ranked Burlington Notre Dame also drew a 1st round bye, they will host February 18th the winner of the February 13th matchup when Waco hosts  Holy Trinity Catholic.  Harmony plays at New London February 13th and Sigourney plays host to Cedar Valley Christian that night.  Those winners meet February 18th at New London.

 

The 9-5, 15th ranked Mt. Pleasant Panther girls basketball team hosts a very talented Eddyville-Blakesburg-Freemont team that has  a record of 12-4, after beating North Mahaska 53-25 last night.  M.P. is coming off a dominating win over Oskaloosa at home Saturday and hope to build momentum tonight with a win so they can go to Ft. Madison Friday night and get a conference win.  Eddyville is coming in with a 5 game winning streak and are led by a very talented senior by the name of Tasha Alexander who averages 21 points a game, Karlie Taylor averages 11 points a game and grabs almost 10 rebounds a game.  Taylor is a niece of Mt. Pleasant teacher and coach Tim Taylor, she also is a 1st team all state and all tournament team selection in volleyball.  The freshman teams play at 4:45 p.m., JV and varsity games will follow, KILJ-FM 105.5 and kilj.com will carry the varsity game live beginning at 7:30 p.m.

 

#4 ranked Mediapolis girls basketball team beat Keokuk 71-60 Monday night on the Bullettes home court.  Andrea Larson hit for 20 points and Darby Massner added 19 to lead Mepo to the win.  #2 Burlington Notre Dame girls won over Van Buren 84-37.  Central Lee girls downed Cardinal of Eldon 59-55, Central Lee won the boys game over Cardinal 53-39.

 

The Latest Associated Press boy’s basketball poll has just two KILJ area teams  ranked.  The Ft. Madison Bloodhounds are 10th in class 3A, that class has Clear Lake as the top ranked team.  Van Buren is ranked 6th in Class 1A, LeMars Gehlen Catholic is #1.  Class 2A is topped by Western Christian and Class 4A by Dubuque Senior.

WRESTLING:  Mediapolis and West Burlington-Notre Dame-Danville at Cardinal, Fairfield and Pekin at Wapello, Washington at Keokuk, Ft. Madison and Centerville at Kirksville, Mo.

The #15 Iowa Hawkeye men’s basketball team has a big game at home tonight as they host #7 Michigan State in Big Ten action. 

 

The Mt. Pleasant middle school basketball games that were scheduled for last night with Washington have been postponed until this Thursday night, January 30th at 4:30.  
The Mt. Pleasant Youth League has 2 bowling sessions left in their season.  They are moving the start time up to 8:30 am for those 2 weeks, due to the Men’s state bowling tournament the Iris Bowling Center is hosting.  Make sure Youth League bowlers arrive early Feb. 1 & Feb. 8.

 

The Shamrock Shuffle, a St. Patrick’s Day-themed 5K Run/Walk, is scheduled to begin at 10 a.m. Saturday, March 15, at Crapo Park. Proceeds from the race will benefit area after-school programs. Burlington Kiwanis sponsors the event.

Shamrock Shuffle participants will run or walk through bursts of color along the festive course. A rainbow of colors will cover whatever participants are wearing. Runners and walkers should dress accordingly.

The Shamrock Shuffle is a non-timed, nonrefundable event. Pets are not allowed. The event will occur rain or shine.

Registration

•             A $20 early entry fee – which includes a white, long-sleeve shirt – is available through Thursday, Feb. 27; after Feb. 27, the entry fee is $25.

•             Youth 12 and under can enter early for $15 through Thursday, Feb. 27; after Feb. 27, the youth entry fee is $20.

•             On-site registration is available from 8:30 to 9:30 a.m. March 15, at the Horseshoe Shelter House off Madison Avenue.

•             Event organizers cannot guarantee shirts after Feb. 27.

Participants can pick up race packets between 11 a.m. and 6 p.m. Friday, March 14, at the Port of Burlington Welcome Center, 400 N. Front St., Burlington.
