A Mt. Pleasant swimmer won a State YMCA swimming title in Marshalltown on Saturday.  Will Davidson the 8 year old son of Jay and Anne Davidson won a state title in the 25 yard breast stroke in a time of 21.73 seconds at the 2014 YMCA State Short Swimming Championships.  He went into the tournament ranked 3rd in the state and came out #1.  Will also finished 3rd in the 50 yard breast stroke in a time of 50.03.  This upcoming weekend he will swim in the Regional Tournament at the University of Iowa.  Davidson swims for the Burlington YMCA team.

 

The 2014 Iowa Girls High School Athletic union State Basketball Tournament begins today at the Wells Fargo Arena in Des Moines.  The Class 1A schools will begin play at 10 a.m. this morning, KILJ-FM 105.5 and kilj.com will carry the Burlington Notre Dame (21-3) vs Adair-Casey (23-3) game at 3:15 p.m. this afternoon.  Tuesday evening at 5 p.m. we will bring you the Mediapolis (23-1) vs Williamsburg (22-2) Class 3A first round game.  Then beginning Thursday morning at 10 a.m. and running thru Saturday night, we will bring you all the semi final and final games in all classes.  Games involving Burlington Notre Dame and Mediapolis will be on KILJ-FM and kilj.com along with all evening games.  Daytime games will be on KILJ-AM 1130 and kilj.com.  Next week we will carry the boys state tournament beginning on Monday morning with first round,  and running thru Saturday nights championship games.

 

The Danville Bears boy’s basketball team had their season come to a close Saturday night in the Class 1A Substate final at Iowa City West High School when Easton Valley defeated the Bears 55-33.  The River Hawks jumped out to a 17-7 1st quarter lead, Danville did pull back to within 4 points in a comeback effort but, then suffered cold shooting and foul trouble which allowed Easton Valley to pull away and punch their ticket to the state tournament.  Mason Spear led Danville with 13 points and Kolton Jackson added 10.  The Bears end the year 21-4.  Easton Valley is a newly consolidated school district made up of Miles East Central and Preston.  Preston made it to the substate final last year also and lost that game to Lone Tree.

A NUMBER OF GAMES WERE POSTPONED UNTIL TONIGHT BECAUSE OF SATURDAY’S STORM.

 

Class 3A substate championship action tonight will have the Ft. Madison Bloodhounds playing Grinnell in the substate championship game at Iowa City West high School.

 

The Southeastern Community College men’s basketball team lost their Region XI championship game to Indian Hills of Ottumwa Saturday night 93-89.  Indian Hills advances onto the National Junior College championships, Southeastern is waiting to hear if they receive an at large bid to the tournament.

 

In their first year in the St. Louis Intercollegiate Athletic Conference (SLIAC), the Iowa Wesleyan women’s basketball team not only brought home the regular season conference title, but the Tigers took several individual awards as well.

Karla Vietinghoff was named the SLIAC Player of the Year and 1st Team All-Conference, she averaged 17.1 pts/game and shot 48.1% from the field.  Vietinghoff was an impressive 41.5% on 3-pt. FG attempts, hitting 129 shots from beyond the arc on the season.

Vietinghoff was also named to the All-Defensive Team after averaging 1.7 steals per game and pulling down 6.8 rebounds a game this season for the purple and white.

Stephanie Russak and Whitney Godden were also named to the All-Conference team, earning SLIAC Honorable Mention All-Conference honors.

Mariah Sartorius was named to the SLIAC All-Sportsmanship Team for the Tigers. 

The Iowa Wesleyan College women’s basketball team has earned the #1 seed in the USCAA DI Women’s Basketball Tournament.  The Tigers will travel to Uniontown, Pa. to go after their first USCAA National Title.

The Tigers will face a formidable opponent in round one on Wednesday morning March 5th as they face #8 Concordia-Alabama, who won the 2012 USCAA National Championship

 

The Iowa Wesleyan College softball team is in the deep south, Myrtle Beach,  to play some games during spring break.  Here are the teams they will be playing:

Mt. Pleasant Park and Rec has several programs open for registration.  An Indoor Soccer Camp runs from March 3rd through 6th at Cottrell Gym.  It is an instructional program for boys and girls in 1st through 8th grade.  Children will learn basics through drills and scrimmages.  It is taught by Neil Schmitz and Brennan Williams.  There is also a Little Dunkers program for 1st and 2nd grade students.  Children will learn the basics of basketball.  The program is instructed by MPCHS Coach Paul Rundquist.  Its runs March 10th through 13th from 6 to 7 pm in Cottrell Gym.   Any questions call Ashley Lohmann at 385-1475.
