Healthy Communities to hold Walking School Bus informational meetings
Healthy Henry County Communities (HHCC) has partnered with the WACO and Winfield-Mt. Union school districts to launch walking school bus programs this spring. A walking school bus is a group of children walking to school with one or more adults. HHCC and a Safe Routes to School representative will host two informational Walking School Bus meetings on Monday, April 28th and invite all Henry County residents and school officials to attend. This is a great opportunity to learn more about what a walking school bus can do for your community or to sign-up as a volunteer. WACO and WMU elementary parents will also have the opportunity to sign their child up for the program. Meetings will be from 12-1pm at the WACO Elementary Library and from 5-6pm at the Winfield-Mt. Union small gym. Light refreshments will be provided.
Research shows that children love being part of a walking school bus and teachers often report that children arrive at school invigorated and ready to learn. By walking to school children get fresh air and enjoy the activity of walking. They also have the opportunity to add more physical activity to their day, learn how to safely negotiate the roads, develop independence, enjoy the environment, and have fun with their friends. Walking school bus programs are great because not only do children benefit from the physical activity but parents know that their child is safely walking with another adult.
WACO’s walking school bus program will start with a route in Crawfordsville on Mondays and Wednesdays with the opportunity for parents to drop their child off along the route. This route will be led by Pastor Jason Collier. WMU is developing a route in Winfield on Wednesdays. More information will be sent home with elementary school students this week.
