Walking School Bus Program Taking off

Written by on May 7, 2014 in News

Healthy Henry County Communities has kicked off a walking school bus program at WACO and W-MU schools.  One route has started at WACO on Monday and Wednesday mornings in Crawfordsville and three routes are in Winfield on Wednesday mornings.  It has started well with kids excited to walk with their friends to school as they learn valuable pedestrian safety tips.  The hope is that more adult volunteers can add more days to the walking school bus schedule.  This program is funded by a grant front the Wellmark Foundation and it is hoped to expand to more schools in the fall.  To learn more about the program, you can call 385-6523.  During the Healthy Henry County Communities meeting yesterday, board members discussed narrowing their focus in order to maximize resources and concentrate their efforts.  The mission remains “working together to make Henry County a better place to live, work and a raise a family” but the focus is now on programs that promote healthy behaviors and reduce child abuse.  That includes obesity reduction efforts, the Substance Abuse Coalition, Boot Camp for New Dads and Community Partnerships for Protecting Children.
