Delmer Hartman Johnston, age 86 of Morning Sun, died Monday May 12, 2014 at the Wapello Nursing and Rehab Center. The son of Archie L. and Augusta W.R. Hartman Johnston, he was born May 25, 1927 at Taylor Ridge, Illinois. On July 3, 1945 he married Patricia Walsh at Long Beach, CA.; she died July 15, 2004. He worked as a welder for Pipemaster/Hawkeye Group. He also worked at Caterpillar Corp. in Burlington. He was self employed as a handyman. He served in the US Navy during W.W. II and Korea as a shipfitter 1st class. He was a former Morning Sun Lions member, city council man, special deputy for the Louisa county Sheriffs dept., and was a member of the Morning Sun American Legion, Master Gardeners and Eagles Club member.
Survivors include: three daughters; Rosemary Schneider of Winfield; Frances VandenBoom of Burlington; Tamara Reyes of Wapello; three sons: Daniel Johnston of Roseville, Illinois; Douglas Johnston of Burlington; James Johnston of Wapello; 17 grandchildren and 24 great grandchildren; one brother, Dallas Johnston of Donna, Texas.
He was preceded in death by his parents, wife, one brother, one sister, and one granddaughter.
Cremation has been accorded.
A memorial service will be Sunday May 18, 2014 at 2:00 p.m. at the First Baptist Church in Yarmouth, with Pastor Jeff Duffy and Mr. Chad Schneider officiating. Interment will be in the Elmwood Cemetery at Morning Sun at a later date. Memorials have been established for the Morning Sun American Legion and Great River Hospice.
