As the Fourth of July draws near, the Donnellson community is making plans to participate in this holiday celebrating the nation’s freedom and independence.

The American Legion Post 474, is organizing the parade for this year’s town celebration, set for 6:00 pm on July 4th, in Donnellson.

The theme for this year’s parade is “Honor Our Defenders” and the parade grand marshal will be Donnellson Fire Chief, Fred Hoyer.

There will be ten (10) categories for parade entries – - religious, patriotic, children (7 years and under), children (8-12 years), family, organizations, political, miscellaneous, commercial, & horses.

A first, second, and third place will be awarded in each category, with $20, $15, & $10 cash prizes. A grand prize of $25 will be given with the entries being judged on creativity, depicting the theme, neatness, and overall general appearance.

Registration will take place the day of the parade, July 4th, from 4.30-5:30 pm at the corner of Maple and Oak Streets in Donnellson (at the corner of St. Paul’s United Church of Christ). All entries must be registered by 5:30 to be eligible for the parade competition.

Entrants are encouraged to consider handing out patriotic items such as small American Flags, patriotic streamers, patriotic whistles, red/white/blue pencils, etc. The parade also provides an opportunity for organizations or individuals to hand out flyers for their own publicity. The throwing of candy is allowed.

Area citizens can also plan to attend the Ice Cream Social and dinner sponsored by The American Legion and the Chapter CK T.T.T. immediately following the parade in the Pilot Grove Savings Bank Community Room. Serving maid rites, hotdogs, ice cream, pie, lemonade, and tea.
