AREA SOFTBALL SCORES: #2 ranked New London blanked Harmony 16-0 winning pitcher Morgan Christner allowed 1 hit and had a home run, Victoria Noel was 3 for 3 at the plate hit a grand slam homer and had 5 RBI’s on the night.

Mediapolis beat IMS 7-0, Ft. Madison downed Central Lee 17-4, Wapello blanked Danville 3-0.

Columbus Community opens play today in the boy’s state soccer championships in Des Moines against Dyersville Beckman at noon. There are 3 classes that will decide champions over the next 3 days.

 

Mt. Pleasant High School golfer Kiley Miller, based on his third place tie in the 2014 3-A State Golf Meet has pre-qualified status for the Iowa Masters Golf Tournament.  The tournament, sponsored by Iowa State University and held at ISU’s Veenker Golf Course, is also one of the tournaments designated by the Iowa Golf Association used to determine the IGA Amateur of the Year.

 The tournament will be held on July 11-13 this year.

University of Iowa women’s golfer Shelby Phillips who is from Arizona, shot a 5 under par 67 to tie Iowa’s all time single best round and set a tournament record in the Chip-N-Club Invitational this past September. Shelby is the granddaughter of Louise and Jim Cordes of New London.

 

The Winfield Mt. Union vs Waco Alumni Football game is coming up July 26th. Tickets are on sale now from any WMU or WACO alumni player. Game will be played at Roth Field in Wayland. It starts at 7pm.

Washington and Mt. Pleasant are going to play each other in football June 7th at Washington. No it’s not a high school game, it’s a full contact alumni game. The Panthers and Demons of yesterday will meet in a real tackle football game that will be sanctioned by Alumni Football USA. The game is part of the Washington, Iowa 175 anniversary celebration, following the game bands and refreshments will be enjoyed in uptown Washington.

Pre-sales of tickets for the game will take place at a cost of $10 per ticket, half that money will be given to the Nick Capaldo family to help cover costs of cancer treatments for their daughter Ellie, tickets are available at The Press Box Grille and Bar and Pep Stop.

Other area alumni games that are played include WMU vs Waco and Columbus Community against Wapello.

The 28th annual Iowa Senior Games (ISG) will be held in West Des Moines June 12-15. Athletes ages 50 and over can register to compete in this Olympic-style competition with 29 sports and nearly 100 events. The early registration deadline is May 19 and the registration fee is $35. After May 19 the registration fee will increase to $40. Registration fee includes a t-shirt, admission to the Hall of Fame banquet, and an unlimited number of Iowa Senior Games events.
“This year’s event will be full of great competition and we are expecting a record number of athletes,” commented Iowa Senior Games director, Matt Beatty. “The West Des Moines community has been a great partner for the Games and we are excited to host another great event.”
Over 800 athletes from across Iowa and the nation are expected to compete. Age groups are broken into 5 year brackets (50-54, 55-59, etc.) with gold, silver and bronze medals awarded to each group.
Participants in this year’s Games will have an opportunity to qualify for the 2015 National Senior Games, held in Minneapolis, MN.

IWC FOOTBALL ALUMNI AND FRIENDS SEVENTH ANNUAL GOLF OUTING

Iowa Wesleyan College is conducting several basketball camps in the near future.

IWC girls basketball camp will be held June 9-11, it’s for grades kindergarten thru 8th. The K-2ND graders have camp from 8-9 a.m. 3rd thru 8th from 9:30 a.m.-3 p.m.

The elite camp for boys in grades 9-12 is May 11th, registration begins at noon, camp begins at 1:30 p.m., goes to 5 p.m. Cost is $30 and camp is held at Ruble Arena.

The Iowa Wesleyan boys basketball camp for ages k-8 for next fall will be held June 16-18. K-2nd grade costs $30, camp runs 8-9 a.m. 3rd-8th is $85, camp runs 9:30 a.m. to 3 p.m. Campers may bring their lunch or purchase at the camp. If you sign up by June 6th you get a free t-shirt.

Boys team camp is June 28th and 29th for JV and varsity teams. The camp will be held at Ruble Arena and costs $150 for 1 day or $250 for both days and 6 games.
