Driven by a goal of rekindling memories of Iowa’s rural schools, Barb and Dave Else of Cedar Falls drove throughout Iowa to photograph more than 230 abandoned or repurposed high school buildings. The experience is the foundation of their book, For All the Small Schools: A Photographic Pursuit of Iowa’s Forgotten Schools.

The 272-page book is a full color photo journey of Iowa’s rural schools. Many of the pictures also contain school facts like school colors and mascots as well as notable athletes and facts. Woven throughout the book is a narrative on the history of education in Iowa, including information on the consolidation of Iowa schools, famous names from Iowa schools, and accounts of transportation as well as sports, music and other student activities. Also included are sections on the evolution of athletic uniforms, school lunch programs and teacher requirements and certifications.

The book is on sale at Barnes & Noble Book Stores.
