The #3 ranked New London Tiger softball team opened up regional tournament play by beating Harmony 10-0 on Barb Carter Field at West Burlington last night. Morgan Christner was the winning pitcher, striking out 10. She helped her own cause offensively also with a two run homer. Emma Pry, Sarah Holtkamp and Sami Koontz each had 2 hits for the Tigers. Haley Browning pitched for Harmony and had their only hit. The Rockets end the year 2-20, while New London improves to 24-4 and advances to the next round of the regional to play Lone Tree on the Lions home field tomorrow night at 7 p.m. KILJ-FM 105.5 and kilj.com will carry the game live.
Lone Tree defeated the Winfield Mt. Union Lady Wolves 9-5 in a quarter final game they hosted, Kayla Coberly suffered the loss in the circle for WMU, Ashley Kruse was 2-4 at the plate and Sam Jamison had a double to lead the WMU offense. Lone Tree is 15-16 as they advance to the semi finals, the Lady Wolves end the year 2-22.

CLASS 2A REGIONAL SCORES: Wapello 9 Danville 1, Highland 8 Van Buren 1. Wapello plays at Highland tomorrow night in a semi final matchup.
Mt. Pleasant with a 15-23 record will open Class 4A softball regional tournament play at 12th ranked 23-13 Keokuk tonight at 7 p.m. KILJ-FM 105.5 and kilj.com will carry the action live. If the Panthers win tonight’s game they play Fairfield on the Lady Trojans home field on Saturday. A win there would send them into the regional final at Oskaloosa on July 15th. The upper part of the regional bracket has Pella, Grinnell and Oskaloosa battling.
The Mt. Pleasant Panther baseball team went to L&M last night and won the varsity game 6-1, Marcus Moothart was the winning pitcher with help from Brady Anderson and Carson Remick. Justin Chalupa led the hitting going 2-4, Panthers had just 4 hits but were issued 9 walks. M.P. travels to Ft. Madison tonight in Southeast Conference play.

The Iowa High School Athletic Association has announced the pairings for the 3A baseball substates. Mt. Pleasant will open play on Friday July 18th at Fairfield against Oskaloosa at 5 p.m. Fairfield will tangle with Ft. Madison in the 7 p.m. game. Those winners will advance to play in the semi finals on Monday July 21st at Fairfield. In the other half of the substate at Centerville, Keokuk plays Knoxville at 5 p.m. and Chariton plays Centerville at 7 p.m. on July 18th.
The Iowa High School Athletic Association has announced the class 1A and 2A district baseball tournament pairings.
Class 1A District 10 has Danville hosting a double header on July 15th. At 5 p.m. Waco tangles with Notre Dame and at 7 p.m. Winfield Mt. Union plays Danville. July 17th at Danville the first round winners will meet at 7 p.m. The district final will be on July 19th at Danville 7 p.m. The other half of the district has Holy Trinity Catholic playing New London at 5 p.m. and Harmony against Van Buren at 7 p.m. on the Van Buren Warriors diamond July 15th. First round winners will play there on the 17th and the semi final winner will play at Danville the 19th. The winner moves onto the sub-state at Washington High School on the 22nd of July at 7 p.m. to play the District 9 champion. Schools in that district are: Clinton Prince of Peace, Easton Valley, Lone Tree, Calamus Wheatland, Midland, Springville, Highland, Lisbon and Bellevue Marquette.
Class 2A opens district play on July 12th with Columbus Community playing West Burlington and Wapello playing Mediapolis at L&M High School. Central Lee and L&M got 1st round byes and play the winners on July 15th at L&M, semi finals are July 19th with the Substate July 22nd at Solon.
The Class 3A pairings for the Mt. Pleasant Panthers will be released next week.
The Mt. Pleasant 8th grade boy’s tournament basketball team captured the Great Four State basketball tournament title at the Target Center in Minneapolis, Minnesota this past weekend. The M.P. team won the championship game over Northfield, Minnesota 37-31.

Mt. Pleasant High School golfer Kiley Miller, based on his third place tie in the 2014 3-A State Golf Meet has pre-qualified status for the Iowa Masters Golf Tournament. The tournament, sponsored by Iowa State University and held at ISU’s Veenker Golf Course, is also one of the tournaments designated by the Iowa Golf Association used to determine the IGA Amateur of the Year.
The tournament will be held on July 11-13 this year.
The Winfield Mt. Union vs Waco Alumni Football game is coming up July 26th. Tickets are on sale now from any WMU or WACO alumni player. Game will be played at Roth Field in Wayland. It starts at 7pm.
Lake Geode Challenge, an Olympic-distance triathlon in southeast Iowa, again will serve as a regional special qualifier race for USA Triathlon’s Midwest Region. USA Triathlon is the governing body for triathlon in the United States. The race, which has been sanctioned by USAT since it began in 1993, has been a special-qualifier race for the last two years. Top finishers at Lake Geode Challenge may qualify for the Age Group National Championship.
This year’s Lake Geode Challenge will begin at 7:30 a.m. Saturday, July 12, at Geode State Park in Danville, Iowa. The event starts with a 1.5-kilometer clockwise, out-and-back swim from the Lake Geode beach. The swim is followed by a 40-kilometer bike course that takes participants on a loop outside Geode State Park. The race concludes with a 10-kilometer run on asphalt roads throughout the park. Chip timing is used.
Prize money ($300, $200, $125, $75 and $50) will be awarded to the top five male and female finishers. Rick Buller Financial Services, LLC, also is sponsoring cash awards ($125, $75 and $50) to the top three male and top three female Masters (40+) finishers. Participants cannot win an overall cash award and a Masters cash award. Members of the top three male, female and coed teams will receive trophies. Participants also will be eligible for door prizes.
Registration fees are $65 for single and $123 for teams through June 28. After that, fees increase to $85 for single and $141 for teams. Entry fees do not include USAT’s required one-day $12 permit for non-member participants.
The race is organized by Team BEAST (Burlington Endurance Athlete Sports Team). Great River Health Systems is the lead sponsor.
