Iowa Residents Invited to
Ring the Freedom Bell to Honor Our Armed Forces
Iowa Governor Terry Branstad has invited the Spirit of Liberty Foundation to bring the Foundation’s Freedom Bell to the 2014 Iowa State Fair. Fair attendees are invited to ring the Freedom Bell on the 9th, 10th and 11th of August to honor a family member or friend who has or is serving in the Armed Forces ― or just to say thank you to our Armed Forces. The bell will be located in front of the Iowa State Fair Administration Building.
The Freedom Bell was cast on June 6, 2013 in bronze with steel from the twin towers as a symbol of support for America’s Armed Forces. It features the official emblems of each branch of the military and the inscription, “HONORING OUR ARMED FORCES PAST, PRESENT AND FUTURE.”
The Bell has been a part of many ceremonies including Flag Day at Independence Hall, the 12th anniversary of 9/11 in New York, Veterans Day at Arlington National Cemetery, Remembrance Day at Pearl Harbor and the Indy 500. Over 1,000,000 people have now seen or rung the Bell.
The Spirit of Liberty Foundation is a 501(c)(3) non-profit organization whose mission is to “Honor and raise awareness and support for our Armed Forces past, present and future” with an emphasis on wounded warriors, their families, and families of fallen heroes.
Local point of contact is Colonel Robert C. King (Ret), Executive Director, Iowa Department of Veterans Affairs, 515-727-3444 or robert.king@iowa.gov.
