The Mt. Pleasant Community School district Board of Directors will meet tonight and approve a number of coaching assignments and two resignations. Leaving their coaching positions will be Jesse Schadt as varsity wrestling assistant and Nathan Lange 7th grade girls basketball. New coaches being approved are: Michael Pilcher JV wrestling coach and volunteer freshman football. Makenzie Sartorius freshman volleyball, Nathan Lange varsity assistant girls basketball, Heidi Huckabone 7th grade girls basketball, Lisa Lowery 8th grade volleyball, Shelby Gillis Middle School Cheerleading coach.
Volunteer coaches being approved Bob Jensen and Marshall Cotton 8th grade football. Curt Bjork 7th grade football and Nick Maynard freshman football.
Iowa State University held it’s press day for football yesterday. Darian Cotton of Mt. Pleasant a 5’11” redshirt junior is listed as the number two strong safety on the Cyclone defense. Darian a returning letter winner also sees action on various specialty teams.
As we preview the 2014 football season for the Mt. Pleasant Panthers there are a lot of question marks. After not winning a game last year for the 1st time in Panther history, coaches players and fans are all anxious to get the season started and get the winning started again.
The schedule this year begins with class 4A Ottumwa on the road August 29th, the Bulldogs were 3-6 last year with a 46-3 win over the Panthers. New teams on the schedule are Mediapolis in week two, they were 11-1 last season. Chariton reappears on the schedule in week 4, they were 4-5 last year. Week five sends Mt. Pleasant to Davenport Assumption for the Knights homecoming game, Assumption was a 4A school last year and had a record of 9-2. Rounding out the newbies is Clear Creek-Amana in week 6, they were a 4-5 team last year.
Coach Shawn Striegel is ready for his 2nd season as head coach and will have to depend on the help of backup players from last year and some contribution from a strong sophomore class.
A new head coach and a lot of new players will make up the 2014 Mt. Pleasant High School varsity volleyball team. Jeff Schulz stepped down after one season at the helm of the Panther volleyball squad. It was a successful year with a 29-5 overall record, and an undefeated conference championship in the Southeast Conference. Solon eliminated M.P. from the post season tournament trail on their way to a 2nd place finish at the state tournament.
New head coach Mark Cremer built a very successful program at Camanche High School and looks to keep Mt. Pleasants success going. The Panthers open the year Saturday August 30th at Clarke High School in a tournament. Thursday September 4th conference play will open with Fairfield visiting Mt. Pleasant.

Varsity / JV – 3:45 – 6:00
Freshman – 5:30 – 7:30
All practices will be held at Mt. Pleasant Community High School.
The Cross Country teams at MPHS are looking to have a successful fall. Coach Jean Caboth will have a girl’s team that will be out to defend a Southeast Conference championship they won last year on the Keokuk course. Mitch Anderson will direct the boys team that finished 2nd at the conference meet as a team but did have the individual champion freshman Logan Murray who also qualified for the state cross country meet finishing 19th.
Rory McIlroy won the PGA Championship golf title Sunday shooting a 268, one stroke ahead of Phil Mickelson. McIlroy won $1.8 million.
A.J. Almendinger won the NASCAR Sprint Cup Cheez-It 355 race at Watkins Glen, New York, Marcos Ambrose was 2nd just 2 seconds behind the winner.
The Mt. Pleasant USBC Bowling Association will be conducting the annual membership meeting Tuesday, August 19 at 7:00 PM at the Iris Bowling Center. The meeting will include the election of Delegates to the State Conventions, High Score Awards will be presented along with other business to be taken care of.
