One of the strongest athletic leaders in the nation, Rick Wulkow, the executive director of the Iowa High School Athletic Association for the past 10 years, is stepping down after 35 years of service to Iowa students and member schools.

In its monthly meeting held in Dubuque over the weekend, the Board of Control of the IHSAA accepted his formal resignation effective January 31, 2015. In the interim months he will work with the new executive director.

Alan Beste, who has been on the IHSAA since 1989 and has served as an Assistant/Associate Director since 1998, has been chosen by the Board of Control to become the next IHSAA Executive Director.

 

The Mt. Pleasant Boys 9th Grade Tournament Team played in the Beyond the Baseline “End of Summer” tournament this past Saturday in Davenport, Iowa.  The team won the tournament by defeating Team Quick (Davenport), Iowa Wolves (Des Moines), and Iowa Intensity (Grinnell) in the championship game.  Team members were:  Jonathon Ita, Maison Ashton, Kieran Kohorst, Jake Lowe, Colin Mulford, and Tanner Ruby.  With the win, this brings their season record to 53-8.  They are coached by Ronnie Ashton and Rick Sartorius.

Iowa Wesleyan College has named a new head men’s basketball coach to replace Todd Lorensen who has left the Tiger program to take the head coaching job at Southwestern Community College in Creston. Lorensen made the move on the last day of July. Wesleyan immediately announced that Alex Huisman who served as assistant coach last year will now move up to head coach.

Former Iowa Wesleyan College volleyball standout BJ Wagy joins the Iowa Wesleyan athletic staff as the new volleyball coach for the 2014-2015 season.  She comes to IWC after graduating from Barry University in May of 2014, with her master’s degrees in Sport Management and Business Administration.

Wagy is a native of Cedar Rapids, IA and a 2011 graduate of IWC with a degree in Exercise Science and Sports Management.  She was a member of both the volleyball and track and field teams during her time at the college.  Wagy holds the school career record for solo blocks with 241, and is 2nd all-time in total blocks with 439.  She also received Academic All-America Honors while at Wesleyan.

 

New London 29th annual Masonic Scholarship golf tournament is coming up Saturday August 16th. It will be held at Deerwood Golf Course to raise money for scholarships for area students. It is a two person best shot with an 8 a.m. shotgun start. Non-Masons and ladies are encouraged to participate. Contact Deerwood to get signed up and get ready to have fun, raise funds and win prizes.

 

There is a glow ball tournament this Saturday August 16, at the Mt. Pleasant Golf and Country Club, the cost is $200 for a four couple team. Price includes all glow accessories, buffet supper, and 9 holes of glow ball golf. Supper starts at 7pm. Golf to follow at dark. Prizes awarded for best decorated glow carts, and most glowing outfit!!! Space is limited call the club today for registration or questions.

 

 

The Mt. Pleasant USBC Bowling Association will be conducting the annual membership meeting Tuesday, August 19 at 7:00 PM at the Iris Bowling Center.  The meeting will include the election of Delegates to the State Conventions, High Score Awards will be presented along with other business to be taken care of.  If you have a concern or encouraging word…let it be known.
