Class 4A Ottumwa handed the Mt. Pleasant Panthers a season opening 42-21 defeat at Shafer Stadium in Ottumwa Friday night. The Bulldogs used their quickness advantage to stymie the Panther offense, M.P. had 166 yards of offense with most of that coming late in the game against reserves. Ottumwa had 415 yards of offense.
After trailing 21-0 at halftime Mt. Pleasant put up 3 scores in the 2nd half with Dshundric Foster returning a kickoff 91 yards for a score, Ben Canby caught a 10 yard scoring pass from Joe Hess and Jack Davis caught a 33 yard td pass. Quarterback Joe Hess was 9 of 22 for 112 yards and had 2 interceptions. Panther receivers dropped a number of catchable balls that could have helped the offensive effort. Pat Canby led Mt. Pleasant’s ground effort with 40 yards on 11 carries before leaving the game with leg cramps. The Panthers have their first home game Friday night against class 2A Mediapolis, the Bulldogs opened their season with a 54-28 win over Camanche.
Mt. Pleasant won the freshman game Friday night 14-0. Jordon Magnani scored on a 3 yard run, Brady Sartorius added the two point conversion. Sartorius then scored on an 18 yard run to wrap up the scoring and win. Defensively Tanner Ruby, Keegan Rich, Jake Lowe and Colin Mulford led the way.
