Press Day 2014 was Monday for the University of Iowa football team that is coming off an 8-5 season, they were 5-3 in the Big Ten and lost in the Outback Bowl to LSU 21-14. The Hawks open 2014 at home against UNI on August 30th. Head coach Kirk Ferentz says the big holes to fill from last year are at linebacker and in the kicking game. The Hawks also sent their tight end C.J. Fiedorowicz to the pros, but that position is still very strong with 4 veterans returning to battle for playing time including Henry Krieger-Coble who is now a junior and listed as 3rd team . In 2013 Henry saw action in all 13 games, he caught no passes, but did return a kickoff for 8 yards. He also appeared on specialty teams. His cousin George Kittle is listed as 4th team at tight end.
It was also announced at press day that Bruce Nelson is the 2014 America Needs Farmers Wall of Honor selection. The honor salutes Hawkeye athletes who exemplify the tenacity, work ethic and character of the Iowa farmers who keep our state the leading agriculture state in the nation. Nelson was a 1st team All American center in 2002 when Iowa shared the Big Ten Championship and played in the FedEx Orange Bowl. The native of Emmetsburg, Iowa was a 4 year letter winner, captain as a senior and played 2 years in the NFL before retiring after being injured.
The Kid Captain selections for the season have been announced. Charlotte Wagaman of Keokuk is the Kid Captain for the November 5th Iowa vs Illinois game. Little 2 year old Charolotte has been battling issues with her heart since birth and is now working hard on the road to recovery.
