The Des Moines County Humane Society is moving forward with plans for a larger animal shelter.
The organization has purchased the former Horse and Hound Country Store property at 3620 Flint Ridge Drive. The Humane Society says its current facility on North Roosevelt Avenue has become too small for the number of animals and services it accommodates.
The newly purchased property includes additional land for a larger facility and possible future expansion. Community fundraising will be needed to complete the project.
During 2025, the Humane Society found homes for 125 dogs and 350 cats. It also reunited 173 dogs and 13 cats with their owners.
A fundraising car show is planned for September 27 at West Burlington Community Park. The event will include adoptable dogs, food and a silent auction.
