Flood Watch Continues as Heavy Rain Moves Through Southeast Iowa

A Flood Watch remains in effect for portions of eastern Iowa and northwest Illinois as another round of moderate to heavy rain moves through the region today.

The National Weather Service Quad Cities says an additional 1 to 2 inches of rain is possible, bringing multi-day rainfall totals to around 2 to 3 inches in many locations. The Flood Watch remains in effect until 1 a.m. Friday.

The heaviest rain this morning is expected farther north, but the rain will gradually shift southeast this afternoon and evening. After 5 p.m., the greatest rain chances are expected south of Highway 34 across southeast Iowa, Missouri and west-central Illinois.

The primary concern is areal flooding rather than flash flooding. Poor-drainage areas, locations that have already received heavy rain, low-lying fields and roads could experience flooding, while streams and creeks could rise quickly. Motorists may also encounter reduced visibility and water ponding on roads.

Rivers will also need to be watched in the coming days. Continued rainfall and runoff could push several rivers to bankfull or flood stage through the weekend. The National Weather Service lists the Iowa and Skunk Rivers among the vulnerable river basins, along with the Mississippi, Wapsipinicon, Rock, English and Cedar.

Drivers are reminded never to drive or walk across a flooded roadway.
