Harold E. Ackles, Jr., 73, (lovingly referred to as Uncle Hairy by his nieces and nephews) passed away peacefully at his home on Saturday, September 12, 2026.
He was the devoted husband of his wife, Jackie, of 54 years. Together, they built a loving family and shared many cherished memories. He was a proud father to Ryan (Jaime), Mt. Pleasant and Kelli (Andrew), Cedar Rapids, and a loving grandfather to his three grandchildren, Brayden and Mikayla Ackles and Anna Teesdale, who brought him great joy.
He is also survived by siblings Tim (Karen) Ackles, Deb Smith and Jim Ackles, sisters-in-law, Janis White and Janet Baity and many nieces and nephews.
Family was the most important part of his life. He enjoyed the many years of fishing trips with his family where the kids and dogs stole sips of beer. He also enjoyed the outdoors, watching and reading Westerns, and spending time in the simple, quiet moments at home. He was a hardworking man who spent most of his career at Benda-Looker and retired from Iowa State Penitentiary.
He was a kind, humble, and easygoing man who preferred not to be the center of attention. Those who knew him will remember his quiet strength, good nature, and deep love for his family.
In accordance with his wishes, there will be no formal funeral services. An informal celebration of his life will be held at Mt. Pleasant Moose Lodge on Thursday, September 17, 2026, at 4:00 pm. Family and friends are invited to come together (please dress casually) to share memories and honor his life. Refreshments and light appetizers will be served.
He is preceded in death by his parents, Harold and Regina (Woods) Ackles, Sr., Chet and Jane (Holaday) Baity, brothers-in-law, Jerry Baity and Rick White.
In lieu of flowers, a memorial has been established.
