A Mount Pleasant woman faces two felony charges after police allegedly found a stolen shotgun inside an impounded vehicle.
Skylah Christine Beach, 35, is charged with possession of a firearm as a felon and trafficking in stolen weapons, both Class D felonies.
Court documents say Mount Pleasant Police stopped a vehicle shortly after 5 a.m. January 12 in the 200 block of South Main Street. Beach was reportedly seated in the back seat directly behind the driver.
The vehicle was impounded for further investigation involving fraudulent license plates and no insurance. During an inventory, police reported finding a Remington 870 Express Magnum 20-gauge shotgun on the rear floorboard behind the driver’s seat.
Investigators later determined the shotgun had been reported stolen in connection with an ongoing Des Moines County burglary investigation. The criminal complaint alleges Beach had immediate access to the weapon and that the driver told police she had placed it inside the vehicle.
Court documents show police requested a warrant for Beach’s arrest in February. Jail records indicate she was booked September 4.
A charge is merely an accusation, and Beach is presumed innocent unless proven guilty.
