The Mount Pleasant City Council has approved a contract for a new United Thru Play Playground, replacing the community playground that served local families for more than 24 years.
The council voted Wednesday to authorize the mayor to sign a contract with BCI Burke Company for the new playground at 203 North White Street. The contract includes playground equipment, safety surfacing and sub-base, along with professional installation.
The original United Thru Play Playground was removed this summer after reaching the end of its useful life.
The replacement will feature three separate play areas. A structure for children ages 5 to 12 will include a 360-degree loop slide, spiral slide, climbing walls, bridge, tunnels and interactive play panels. A separate area for children ages 2 to 5 will include slides, a tunnel, low climbers, balance beam and learning panels.
A freestanding swing set will include four belt swings, a toddler seat and an adaptive Freedom swing seat.
Shade canopies will cover portions of both play structures to help keep the equipment cooler and reduce sun exposure.
Altogether, the new playground will offer 50 play activities with capacity for as many as 238 children at one time. The green and gray equipment will be installed over approximately 6,265 square feet of turf safety surfacing.
The city says the layout meets national ASTM and Consumer Product Safety Commission playground safety standards.
