Prep Tennis: Burlington’s Bertlshofer Claims SEC Title

Tyce Bertlshofer won the SEC crown, defeating his teammate Rich Bleisener in the finals 6-4, 6-0 at yesterday’s Southeast Conference meet at Dankwardt Park.

Bertlshofer, the top seed in the league, swept his way to the finals before Bleisener took four games in the championship.

Mount Pleasant was led in singles play by Tim Cam, who finished in fourth.

Cam opened his day with a tiebreaker win, before being beaten by Bertlshofer in the semifinals.

He then suffered a 9-7 loss in the 3rd place match to Ivan Lopez of Keokuk.

6th seeded Elliot Cook ended in 5th place, earning consolation championship. Cook took down Keokuk’s Brenton Worster in the 5th place scrap.

In doubles action, Fairfield’s group of Jace Hannes and Garrett Flanagan were champs — besting Mount Pleasant’s tandem of Owen Vansickel and Jake Ensminger, 6-1, 6-4 in the championship.

Levi Graber and Lincoln Henriksen, both of Mount Pleasant took home the consolation championship. They won 8-3.

Mount Pleasant will play in a 1A preliminary substate dual on Friday against Maharishi, while Burlington will travel to Ottumwa for a Class 2A substate semifinal.

College Baseball: Bonner, Cordero Named to the CAC All-Tournament Team

Iowa Wesleyan’s Sage Bonner and Cristian Cordero have both been named to Continental Athletic Conference All-Tournament team, the league announced.

Bonner went 5-for-12 with three doubles, two runs and a stolen base.

Cordero racked up five hits — including two doubles — driving in three and scoring three runs of his own.

Top-seeded Georgia Gwinnett College captured the inaugural Continental Athletic Conference Baseball Championship with a 5-2 victory against Fisher College (Massachusetts).

Georgia Gwinnett and Fisher will now represent the CAC in the Opening Round of the NAIA national championship tournament, May 16-19.

The tournament field will be announced by the NAIA national office Thursday, May 12, at 4 p.m. central.

NFL: Linderbaum Adjusting to Life in the NFL

Former Iowa star Tyler Linderbaum got on the field for the first time in Baltimore at the Ravens’ mini-camp. The All-American center was taken in the first round by the Ravens and is now learning a new system.

“At the end of the day, football is football. We run similar stuff, but it’s just a lot different verbiage. But also we are running only 10% of the plays we’ll run in season, so there’s a lot more to learn” Linderbaum said.

Linderbaum was the 25th overall pick in the first round of last month’s draft.

Baltimore finished last season 8-9, but star quarterback Lamar Jackson missed the final portion of the team’s regular season.

Spring Sports: Postseason Ramps Up Today

We continue galloping towards the postseason and today will be a big day for that.

On the links, the Southeast Conference girls’ golf meet will commence at Flint Hills Golf Course in Burlington.

The Mount Pleasant boys’ golf team will travel to Sheaffer Memorial Golf Course in Fort Madison for sectional play.

Competing there will be Clear Creek-Amana, Fairfield, Keokuk, Mount Pleasant, Solon, Washington and West Burlington-Notre Dame.

On the hardcourt, Martha Peterson and the Mount Pleasant girls’ tennis team will compete in regional play.

The Panthers will travel Fairfield, where they’ll hook up in singles and doubles play with Assumption, Centerville, Fort Madison, Keokuk, Maharishi and West Burlington-Notre Dame.

David Jones Harlan

David Jones Harlan 79 years of Euless, TX,  formerly of  Mt Pleasant ,Iowa died in Euless Texas May 7.

David was born May 28, 1942 in Mt Pleasant, IA and was son of Betty Jones Harlan and Laverne Watson Harlan.

He graduated from Mt Pleasant High  School in 1960. Retired after 39 years as Director Technical support for the BNSF railroad in 2001.

Surviving is his partner of 43 years Elmain Quintana, they were married in Mexico City February 2014 and in Tarrant County Texas April 2018.

David was preceded in death by his parents and infant brother. there will be no funeral service and the body has been cremated per his wishes. Interment will be at Evergreen  Cemetery Fairfield ,Iowa.

School Board Approves Employee Compensation Packages

Monday night the Mount Pleasant School Board approved the compensation packages for the next fiscal year for non-certified school personal and administrators. Non-certified includes secretaries, food service, bus drivers and managers. The Directors of Transportation, Technology, Buildings and Grounds are considered managers. The building principals and the activity director are considered administrators. Packages were also approved for everyone in Central Office including the superintendent. The overall increase is 2.85 percent. The break down of settlements approved by the board are…

Secretaries:  3.40%

Transportation (bus drivers):  3.50%

Managers:  1.79%

Administrators 1.86%

Central Office 3.41%

Managers and administrators are a bit lower because the district saved some money due to new hires in those two groups.

Boys’ Prep Tennis: Mount Pleasant Finishes Third at Districts

Fairfield — Mount Pleasant finished with 10 points in team scoring, earning third place at Fairfield in a Class 1A district meet.

Cedar Rapids Xavier won districts with 32 points, with Maharishi placing second.

The Panthers will advance to preliminary substate on Friday, where they will travel to Maharishi.

Owen Vansickel and Lincoln Henriksen were quarterfinalists for Mount Pleasant, before being beaten by two Xavier Saints.

Xavier’s top-ranked Brady Horstmann was the meet champion. The UW-LaCrosse recruit is now 11-2 on the year.

He squared off with his teammate Quincy Johnson in the final.

Maharishi junior Zak Askar was the consolation champion.

In doubles play, Tim Cam and Elliott Cook and Jake Ensminger and Levi Graber were quarterfinalists.

Xavier’s tandem of Declan Coe and Hugh Courter were doubles champs.

Trenton Link and Ryan Schmit — also both of Xavier — were consolation champions.

Girls Prep Tennis: Walls, Olivas Draw All-Conference Honors

Fort Madison — Savana Walls and Melanie Olivas earned All-Conference doubles honors yesterday in the Southeast Conference tennis meet.

The Panther duo lost to Jacqui Workman and Emily Mosley of Burlington in the championship.

Gisele Fajardo-Pena teamed up with Malena Yocum for a 9th place finish in the conference.

That group defeated Emma Wendland and Emily Simpson of Fairfield.

In singles play, Eva Rounceville finished in 8th, while Ellie Situmeang placed 10th.

Girls’ Golf: New London Rolls to SEISC Title

Wapello — The New London Tiger girls’ golf team earned yet another SEISC title yesterday, rolling to a near 80 stroke win at Heritage Oaks Golf Course.

New London was led by meet medalist Taylor Phillips, who finished with an 82, seven strokes better than that of second place Olivia Hines of Mediapolis.

All told, New London put five in the top-11, with Sophie Malott placing third, Saige Barron tied for 6th, Emma Nye was 8th.

Winfield-Mount Union was led by Alli Humphreys, who finished in 9th with a 111.

Louisa-Muscatine ended second in the team race, with Mediapolis third.

Highland and Winfield-Mount Union rounded out the top-five.

Boys’ Soccer: Fort Madison Blanks Mount Pleasant

Mount Pleasant — Fort Madison opened the game up with five second half goals as the No. 11 ranked Bloodhounds rolled to a 6-0 win over Mount Pleasant last night.

Nathan Bowen scored twice for Fort Madison, while Leif Boeding added two assists.

Reiburn Turnbull made two saves for the Bloodhounds, who improved to 11-4.

Mount Pleasant fell to 1-13.
