Girls’ Track: Panther Girls’ Follow Suit, Roll at Keokuk

Keokuk — Mount Pleasant dominated the field for 211 points as the Panthers earned a team win at the Keokuk Relays.

Mount Pleasant was 71 points better than that of second place Clark County.

Kenna Lamm won four events.

Lamm picked up wins in the 100m dash, 200m dash, 100m hurdles and was on the winning 4×400 team along with Mica Carter, Andi Scott and Elise Lange.

Iowa State recruit and Drake Relays qualifier Jadan Brumbaugh evaporated the shot put field again, with a toss of 44 feet, 9.5 inches.

Alyssa Dascher followed suit with a win in the discus, throwing 104 feet, 9 inches.

Mount Pleasant also won the 4×200, sprint medley and shuttle hurdle.

College Softball: Wesleyan Splits with Culver-Stockton

Mount Pleasant — Iowa Wesleyan split with upstart Culver-Stockton yesterday, falling in game 13-0 while coming back for a 3-2 win in game two.

In game one, Culver-Stockton used a seven-run third inning to blow the game wide open.

The Wildcats tacked on two runs in the 4th and 5th to earn the run rule win.

Kara Krieger had two hits despite the loss.

Jordan Morthland was the losing pitcher, tossing 2.1 innings allowing six hits and seven runs all earned.

In game two, former Danville prep Haiden Molter threw a complete game, allowing just two runs for the nail-biting 3-2 win.

Molter allowed just eight hits and struck out one.

She also got it done at the plate, going 2-for-3 with two runs batted in.

Ariana Wolfard had the other RBI.

Karoline Stratton and Kylie Topliff each had two hits.

The split moved the Tigers to 6-25.

The team will be back in action today when they take on Viterbo University.

Boys’ Tennis: Mount Pleasant Falls to Burlington

The Mount Pleasant boys’ tennis team suffered their second loss of the season last night when the Panthers fell to Burlington 7-2.

Owen Vansickel fell in No. 1 singles 8-4 before Jake Ensminger rallied back for an 8-2 win in No. 2 singles, defeating Hunter Ford.

Burlington then ripped off three straight wins before Lou Schimmelpfennig earned an 8-5 in No. 6 singles.

In doubles play, Burlington swept all three doubles matches.

Vansickel and Ensminger lost 8-3, Levi Graber and Tim Cam dropped an 8-5 decision while Elliot Cook and Lou Schimmelpfennig fell 8-4.

The Panthers are now 6-2 on the year.

Girls’ Tennis: Panthers Earn Win No. 1

Savana Walls blanked Ashi Pennaka in No. 1 singles as the Mount Pleasant girls’ tennis team won their first dual of the year yesterday, 5-4.

Malena Yocum picked up a win for the Panthers in No. 4 singles, 8-2 over Shona Anderson.

Mount Pleasant swept doubles play.

Walls and Melanie Olivas won 8-3, rallying for seven straight points.

Gisele Fajardo-Pena teamed with Yocum for an 8-6 winners, while Eva Rounceville and Ellie Situmeang rolled 8-3.

Mount Pleasant is now 1-7.

Notre Dame slumped to 0-3.

Boys’ Track: Mount Pleasant Boys Snag Easy Win

Mount Pleasant racked up 197 points as the Panthers earned an easy win at the Keokuk Relays at Calvert Stadium.

Fort Madison finished as runner-up with 128 points with Burlington slotting in third with 84.5 points.

Mount Pleasant senior Will Davidson continued what has been a terrific final season, winning the 200m dash in 22.02 and also claiming gold in the 110m hurdles in 15.21 seconds — his fastest time this year.

Following in the footsteps of his older brother Khang, Avin Truong earned a win in the long jump. Avin, just a freshman, soared 20 feet, 5.5 inches for the win.

The Panthers also received wins in the 4x800m, distance medley and shuttle hurdle relay.

Boys’ Track: Mediapolis Victorious in New London

Mediapolis earned gold in six events as the Bulldogs rolled to win at the Chris Selby Invite in New London last night.

Kadin Salek zoomed to gold in the 400m dash, winning in 52.25 seconds — he also went 19 feet, 10.5 inches in the long jump for gold.

Mediapolis’ terrific Anthony Isley also showed why he’s one of the area’s top athletes.

Isley showed off his wheels, winning the 200m dash in 22.81 seconds.

New London finished as the team runner up, the Tigers won seven events.

Kade Benjamin, a Drake Relays qualifier, had an easy night on the high jump, clearing 6 feet, 6 inches for first.

Carter Allen also picked up a win — he’ll join Benjamin in Des Moines later this week — in the discus, with a heave of 144 feet, six inches.

New London also earned wins in both the sprint and distance medley.

Keokuk Bank Robbery

At about 9:40 Tuesday morning, a person went into Two Rivers Bank at 115 Boulevard Road in Keokuk and demanded money. The person then walked away from the bank.

James “Jim” Frary

James “Jim” Frary, 64, passed away Monday, April 25, 2022, surrounded by his family at his rural Salem home.

Jim was born August 22, 1957, the son of Bob and Esther (Waldmeier) Frary of Salem, Iowa. He was the sixth child born to the family. Jim grew up helping on the family farm that has been in the Frary family since 1865, when his great great grandfather Thomas Edgar Frary bought the original 160 acres. It has been recognized as a Century Farm and has been owned by Jim since his father Bob’s passing in 2007. Jim was a self-employed farmer and also worked for Jerry Francy. On May 11, 1985, Jim married Ruth Wilson in Mount Pleasant. To this union, their son James “JJ” Edgar Frary, Jr. was born. The couple later divorced. Jim was a member of Pheasants Forever, Iowa Cattlemen’s Association, and the Salem Fire Department. He enjoyed hunting, fishing, the Chicago Cubs and NASCAR racing. Jim especially enjoyed spending time with his grandchildren, Madden, Hynlee, and McCoy.

Jim is survived by his son JJ (Nikki) Frary of Fort Madison; three grandchildren, Madden, Hynlee, and McCoy; two brothers, John (Lisa) Frary of Magnolia, Texas, Tom (Cindy) Frary of Mount Pleasant; sister Sara (Mike) Miller of Brownwood, Texas; brother-in-law Jim Harshbarger of Salem; sister-in-law Sue Frary of Mount Pleasant and many nieces and nephews, great nieces and nephews, and a great great niece.

Jim was preceded in death by his parents, sister Martha Harshbarger, and a brother Neal Frary.

Visitation will be held Friday, April 29, 2022, from 12:00-7:00 pm, at the Olson-Powell Memorial Chapel in Mount Pleasant, with family greeting friends from 4:00-7:00 pm. A Celebration of Life will begin at 4:00 pm, Saturday, April 30, 2022, at The Underground in Salem. Burial will be at a later date in the Salem East Cemetery. Linda L. Tomson, 55, of Salem passed away on Thursday, April 21, 2022, at the Henry County Health Center in Mt. Pleasant.

Girls’ Golf: Wibben Ties for 8th at Flint Hills

Burlington — Samantha Wibben carded a 49 as the Panther senior finished in a tie for 8th at yesterday’s Southeast Conference meet at Flint Hills Golf Course in Burlington.

Wibben tied with Fairfield junior Viola Welsh for 8th.

Mount Pleasant sophomore Kylie Walderbach tied for 19th.

Walderbach carded a 56.

Lauren Briggs of Burlington was the meet medalist shooting a low score of 40.

Keokuk’s Natalie Ames finished second with a 41 while teammates Makenna Conrad and Kaylin Long — both of Washington — finished with 43’s for third.

Washington won the team race with 180 strokes, with Keokuk placing second.

Mount Pleasant — with just two golfers competing — did not have enough players for a team score.

Boys’ Golf: Kempker Medalist at Sheaffer Memorial

Fort Madison — Mount Pleasant senior Reece Kempker picked up medalist honors, carding a 1-under 34 as Mount Pleasant second at the last Southeast Conference boys’ golf meet of the year.

Nick Matheney finished as runner up with a 39.

Washington won the team race with 173 strokes.

Tyler Wade was the leader for Fort Madison with a 42. Nick Profeta paced Keokuk registering a 43.

Fairfield, Fort Madison and Keokuk went 3rd, 4th, and 5th respectively.

Washington won the season championship with 856 strokes over five different courses.
