Jerry Bradley

Jerry Bradley, 83, of Mt. Pleasant died   peacefully Sunday, November 14, 2021, at his home surrounded by family.

Jerry was born October 10, 1938, in Fairfield, Iowa, the son of Arthur F. and Nevada E. (Shondel) Bradley. Jerry was a 1957 graduate of Fairfield High School. On August 15, 1965, Jerry married Lea Vorhies in Fairfield, IA.  He served in the National Guard for a total of 8 years.  Jerry was the owner and operator of Jerry’s Pizza for 52 years.
Jerry enjoyed bowling, golf, softball (slow and fast pitch), and was an avid fisherman.  He enjoyed car cruises in his 59 Chevy.  He was an avid St. Louis Cardinals and Iowa Hawkeyes fan.  Jerry belonged to the Masonic Lodge, The Iris Bowling Hall of Fame, and Hope Lutheran Church. His favorite overall pastime was watching his children, grandchildren and great grandchildren in their activities.

Jerry is survived by his wife, Lea; two daughters, Beth (Juston Sammons) Fisher and Barb (Kean) Rich; a son, Brent Bradley all of Mt. Pleasant; seven grandchildren, Kaitlin Fisher, Ft. Collins, CO, Paxton Fisher, Kelsey (Jerratt) Norton, Kyla Rich, Keegan Rich, Sydney Bradley  all of Mt Pleasant, and Brayden Bradley of Sanford, FL;  two great grandchildren, Audrey and Josie Norton; a brother, Jack Bradley of Fairfield; a sister, Ann Edwards of Washington;  two sisters-in-law, Iona Bradley of Baltimore and Dee Bradley of Fairfield and many nieces and nephews.

He was preceded in death by his parents, 6 brothers, Tom, Jim, Chuck, John, Mike and Pete and 2 sisters, Phyllis Kelton and Linda Vorhies.

A Celebration of Life Service will be held at 10:30 a.m., Thursday, November 18, 2021 at Hope Lutheran Church, Germanville, IA with Pastor Ryan Dexter officiating. Burial will follow at 1:30 p.m. with Military Rites in Vorhies Cemetery, rural Lockridge. Visitation will be held from noon to 7:00 p.m. with family present from 5:00 p.m. to 7:00 p.m., Wednesday, November 17, 2021, at Olson-Powell Memorial Chapel.

In lieu of flowers the family requests memorials be given to Vorhies Cemetery, Hope Lutheran Church, EveryStep Hospice, or St. Jude’s Children’s Hospital.  Messages and tributes may be directed to www.powellfuneralhomes.com.

18 Year Old Shot and Killed in West Burlington

On November 14, 2021, at approximately 3:14 PM, West Burlington Police were dispatched to Pat Klein Park, 631 Swan Street, West Burlington, Iowa, for a report of shots fired. Upon arrival, police discovered an eighteen year old victim that was shot. The eighteen year old victim was transported to the South East Iowa Regional Medical center where he was declared deceased. Law Enforcement took into custody a juvenile related to the investigation. Law Enforcement does not believe there is any risk to the public at this time.

The Iowa Division of Criminal Investigation was requested to respond to the scene and conduct an investigation. The investigation is ongoing and DCI is being assisted by the West Burlington Police Department, Burlington Police Department, Des Moines County Sheriff’s Office, and the Iowa State Patrol.

The investigation is ongoing. Those with information related to the shooting are asked to contact the West Burlington Police Department.

Train derailment into Mississippi River near Montrose

At approximately 11:50 PM on November 13, 2021 a train collided with a barge that had been parked along the shore of the Mississippi River near Montrose in Lee County, Iowa. The southbound train operated by BNSF hit the stationary barge, derailing two locomotives and overturning several coal cars between the main line and side track. Several hundred gallons of diesel was released on the ballast material, and was seeping into the Mississippi River from the locomotive fuel tank.  A number of coal cars spilled an unknown quantity of coal into the river. No injuries were reported.

Iowa DNR is working with local emergency responders, the U.S. Environmental Protection Agency, US Fish and Wildlife Service and US Coast Guard.

Larry S. Henessee final arrangements

Larry S. Henessee, 74, of Mount Pleasant, unofficial weatherman at HyVee for years, died Friday, November 12, 2021 at his home. He was born June 22, 1947 in Mt. Pleasant to Ellis L. and Jean May Myers Henessee.
He attended Mt. Pleasant Schools where he was active in FFA and 4-H.
For 38 years, Larry worked at Mt. Pleasant HyVee until his retirement in 2014. He also worked at AARP in Burlington. He enjoyed deer hunting, fishing and camping, hours spent bowling at Iris Lanes, dining at Jerry’s Pizza, attending the Ft. Madison rodeo and the Blue Grass music festival in Livonia, Missouri, and he enjoyed watching the Chicago Cubs, NY Yankees and the Chicago Bears. For 40 years, he volunteered at the giant slide at the Iowa State Fair. Larry was an amazing uncle and great uncle and took his nieces and nephews camping at the state fair, to Adventureland, 7 Ponds, and Geode. He especially enjoyed hide and seek and loved Halloween. For many years he mowed the Greenwood School lawn.
Larry is survived by one brother Dennis (Lorna) Henessee of Mt. Pleasant; three sisters, Karen Vaughn of San Angelo, Texas, Linda Norton of Mt. Pleasant and Donna Dean of Danville; and many beloved nieces and nephews. He was preceded in death by his parents, one infant brother, and brothers-in-law Pat Dean and Rick Vaughn.
The funeral service will be held at 11:00 AM, Wednesday, November 17, 2021 at Elliott Chapel, New London. Burial will follow at Burge Cemetery, rural New London. Visitation will begin at noon on Tuesday at Elliott Chapel with the family present to greet friends from 5:00 – 7:00 PM. A memorial has been established for Mt. Pleasant Youth Bowling. Leland Lyle “Shorty” Fye

Leland Lyle “Shorty” Fye, 79, of Farmington, Iowa, passed away Tuesday, November 9, 2021, near Wever, Iowa.

He was born on November 3, 1942, in Moline, Illinois, the son of Leland Lyle, Sr. and Beulah May (Sloan) Fye. On January 25, 1964, he married Clara Joann Newberry in Keokuk, Iowa. She preceded him in death on October 2, 1989.

He is survived by his three children: Terri Fye of Fort Myers, Florida, Marc (Susan) Fye of Edmond, Oklahoma and Cole Fye of Edmond, Oklahoma; two grandchildren: Courtney Beem and Rachel (Brad) Bartholomew; two sisters: Lori (Farrell) Keough of Frederick, Maryland and Cecelia (Peter) Podolak of Vancouver, Canada and life partner Judy Sanders of Fort Madison, Iowa.

He was preceded in death by his parents; wife and sister: LuAnn in infancy.

Shorty retired from Fruehauf/Wabash. He was a member of Green Acres Country Club in Donnellson. He enjoyed boating, golfing, hunting and driving the countryside with Judy.

His body has been entrusted to the crematory of Schmitz Funeral Home for cremation.

Services will be held at a later date with burial at Greenglade Cemetery.

A memorial has been established in his memory.

Prep Cross County: Two Danville-NL Runners Named All-State

KILJ — Two Danville-New London prepsters have been selected as All-State honorees by the Iowa Association of Track Coaches, following their terrific senior campaigns.

Both Ty Carr and Alexander Julian were honored as All-State choices.

Carr clocked a season best time of 16:35 even, while Julian’s top time was 17:03.6

Both men were All-State state selections last year by the Iowa Association of Track Coaches, as well.
