Mary “Eileen” Kirchner

Mary “Eileen” Kirchner, 81, of Houghton, Iowa, passed away at 2:01 a.m. Saturday, November 6, 2021,  at the Henry County Health Center in Mt. Pleasant, Iowa.

She was born on March 17, 1940, in St. Patrick, Missouri, the daughter of William F. and Nola M. (Logsdon) Boudreau. On October 17, 1959, she married Charles A. Kirchner in St. Patrick, Missouri. He preceded her in death on August 4, 1999.

She is survived by her two daughters: Karen (Kenny) Mehmert of St. Paul, Iowa and Kathy (Marty) Menke of Houghton, Iowa; five sons: Kevin (Jamee) Kirchner of Cedar Rapids, Iowa, Chuck (Sue) Kirchner of Palatine, Illinois; Brent (Rachel) Kirchner of Coralville, Iowa, Brian (Heather) Kirchner of Cedar Rapids, Iowa and Kyle (Gina) Kirchner of East Dubuque, Illinois; grandchildren: Kameron (Jamie), Quinn (Madonna), Mitchell, Cole, Alyssa (Adam) Justin (Abby), Cody (Rycki), Nicholas (Trisha), Dana (Erik), Dylan (Selena), Cal, Christy, Allyson, Bailey, Lainey, Brevin and Bradin; great grandchildren: Danika, Gabby, Devan, Jack, Mateo, Kinsley, Gentry, Berken, Clara and Grace; sisters-in-law: Joanne Boudreau and Dorothy Kirchner and brother-in-law: Robert (Rita) Kirchner. Also surviving are several nieces and nephews.

She was preceded in death by her parents; husband: Charlie; one son: Chris; granddaughter: Kelsey and brother: Eston.

Eileen graduated from St. Patrick High School in St. Patrick, Missouri, a year early in 1957. She also attended Mount St. Clare College in Clinton, Iowa for one year. She then moved with her husband Charlie and kids to the Houghton area in January of 1974. She always helped to provide for her family working several jobs and finally settling in at Staats in Mt. Pleasant where she worked for twenty-seven years until she retired at the age of seventy-seven.

Eileen was a member of St. John the Baptist Catholic Church, the Altar and Rosary Society of the Church and the Daughters of Isabella.

She was a devoted wife, mother, grandmother, homemaker, and seamstress. If anyone had a piece of clothing that needed altering or made from scratch, she was the woman to call, grabbing her sewing machine and getting to work. She was extremely creative making gifts for her family and cooking amazing food, especially her homemade noodles.Like all mothers and grandmothers she enjoyed spending time with her kids, grandkids, and great grandkids. She also enjoyed playing Euchre and Back Alley Bridge with her card club and of course drinking several cups of Folgers instant coffee a day.

Later in life she discovered quilting, allowing her to create several special friendships with fellow quilters and making a quilt for all of her kids and grandkids. After living in the country for years, she moved into town in Houghton in 2016 making her new house feel like we lived there all of our lives. Her faith kept her strong all the way to the end, praying several Hail Marys in the hospital.

May she rest in peace in Heaven united with her one true love Charlie, her parents, brother, son, and granddaughter.

Friends may call after 12:00 noon Tuesday, November 9, 2021, at St. John’s Catholic Church, where the family will receive friends from 4:00 p.m. to 6:30 p.m. that evening. A parish rosary will be recited at 6:30 p.m. at the church.

A Mass of Christian burial will be held at 11:00 a.m. Wednesday, November 10, 2021, at St. John’s Catholic Church in Houghton with Father Dan Dorau as celebrant.

Burial will be at St. Patrick Cemetery in St. Patrick, Missouri.

Memorials have been established in her memory for St. Patrick Cemetery or Houghton Fire and Rescue.

Patrick McCormick, 64, of Mount Pleasant, died Friday, November 5, 2021, at his home after a courageous battle with cancer.

A Memorial Mass will be held at 10:30 a.m. Thursday, November 11 at St. Alphonsus Catholic Church in Mount Pleasant. Visitation will be held from 2:00 – 7:00 p.m. Wednesday, November 10, 2021, at the Olson-Powell Memorial Chapel.

Women’s College Basketball: Tigers Perfect at Oak Hills Tournament

Canton (MO.) — Iowa Wesleyan used a 14-3 first half run to jump out to an early lead and never looked back as the Tigers rolled to 91-76 win over Williams Baptist University, Saturday.

The win capped a perfect weekend at the Oak Hills Inn and Suites Classic.

Breanna Wendland paced Iowa Wesleyan with a 20-point, 10-rebound double-double.

Maci Kuchta and Brittany West each added 17 points, while Kuchta had seven assists.

Brielle Baker chipped in with 16 points.

Now 3-0, the Tigers will take on Monmouth College in their next contest Wednesday at Ruble Arena.

Tip is set for 5:30 pm.

Men’s College Basketball: Wesleyan Drops Fourth Straight

Columbia (MO.) — Iowa Wesleyan’s losing skid has extended to four games following their 84-73 loss to Columbia on Saturday.

The Tigers, trailing for the majority of the game, cut the lead to single digits late but Columbia’s 16-of-19 from the free throw line proved to be the difference.

Former New London standout Alex Dentlinger paced Wesleyan with 25 points and three boards.

Victor Munoz had 16 points and five boards despite the loss, as well.

Tony Burks led Columbia with 24 points and 11 rebounds.

Wesleyan will look to snap their skid on Wednesday night when they host Clarke University.

Tip is scheduled for 7:30 p.m.

College Football: Waldorf Stampedes Tigers

Burlington — Waldorf led 21-0 at half and 35-0 at the end of the three quarters, riding that to a 42-12 win over Iowa Wesleyan on Saturday.

Wesleyan quarterback Gavin Esquivel completed 16-of-34 passes for 207 yards, two touchdowns and interception.

Jaden Harris hauled in four catches for 68 yards while Kelan Dove was the recipient of both touchdown throws.

Kam Cole led the ground game with 13 handles for 78 yards.

Waldorf rushed for 232 yards as a team and four scores.

Wesleyan, now 2-7, will look to close the season with a bang when the travel to Mayville State on Saturday.

Kick is set for 1:00 p.m.

The Reverend Charles Tweed

The Rev. Charles Tweed, 75, of North Liberty, died Friday, November 5, 2021, at New London Specialty Care. He was born August 3, 1946 in Marshalltown to Omar Gordon and Laura LuRee Blake Tweed. On May 28, 1967, he married Jean Percilla Capen in Middletown, Connecticut.
He graduated from Tama Toledo High School, studied music in Oberlin, Ohio and received a Bachelor’s in History at Grinnell, Iowa.
For more than forty years he served as Minister of the Congregational Universalist Church in Mt. Pleasant retiring in 2004. He was of the Christian faith, a humanitarian, and a classical pianist who also loved biking, hiking and camping in the Tetons, and sipping coffee with friends. He had a wonderful sense of humor and loved to tell jokes, but he was happiest when surrounded by family.
Survivors include his wife Jean of North Liberty; two daughters, Ellise Tweed of North Liberty and Heather (Billy) Schlarbaum of New London; and four grandchildren, Hunter, Angelica, Joshua, and Caleb. His parents preceded him in death.
Acccording to his wishes his body has been cremated and a Celebration of Life will be held in the spring. Cards and condolences may be sent to Heather Schlarbaum at 104 E.
