Farm Equipment on the Road Safety Alert!

It’s Harvest season across the Midwest and Southeast Iowa. Farmer safety on roadways involves both farmers operating equipment and motorists sharing the road.  Farmers should ensure equipment is well-lit, marked with a slow moving vehicle emblem, and kept clean, limiting travel during peak hours and using escort vehicles for large equipment. Motorists should slow down, maintain a safe following distance, never assume the farmer’s intentions before passing, and provide ample space for the large, slow-moving vehicles.

More than 1,100 motor vehicle crashes involving farm equipment occur in Midwest states each year.  The Iowa DOT offers these tips for motorists for driving in areas where farm equipment on the road is common:

  • Be alert and always watch for slow-moving vehicles.
  • Don’t tailgate.
  • Watch for turns. A farmer may use hand signals as well as blinkers. Farm machinery makes wide turns, and often directly into a field, where there is no obvious road.
  • Be patient. Don’t assume the equipment operator can move aside to let you pass. The shoulder may not be able to support a heavy farm vehicle.
  • Slow down as soon as you see farm equipment.

Sports, September 13th

High School Football

Mt. Pleasant’s goal was to dominate and they did just that, improving to 3-0 for the first time since 2008 in a 34-20 dismantling of Oskaloosa last night. The defense continually pressured the quarterback, tallying seven sacks and a couple bad throws, leading to interceptions by Jack Newman and Asa Rose.

The offense took advantage of the situations with Ramzy Davis piling into the endzone three times and Ryan Helling finding paydirt once. Yet, it was the connection of Grayson Walker and Isaiah Lange that saw the Panthers get on the board first as four of Walker’s passes and 70 of his 132 yards went to Lange, including his lone touchdown pass. Lange added 3.5 sacks on defense, bringing his two week total to seven. Panther head coach John Bowlin talked about how the team’s sophomores have stepped up to the challenge,

“You know we talked about that too, trying to get him the ball a little bit more on offense. You know, we were able to do that tonight and obviously. I think we’ve seen in the last two weeks what he can do on the defensive side. I think he had 3 1/2 sacks tonight. He’s a pretty special player and works really hard and he’s just going to keep getting better and better. He’s got a great attitude. You know, as well as these other guys do you know I said we got 2 sophomore running backs. And taking a big, big load of everything, a lot of guys on defense, Asa Rose stepping up on defense, Griffin Jones at corner, just, you know, really proud of them. And it’s nice to see that we’ve got some future to look forward to as well as right now.”

The Iowa Department of Transportation (Iowa DOT) construction contractor  shifted phases on the Highway 61 bridge over Highway 34 on Friday. This will move traffic from the outside lanes to the inside lanes.

Most traffic will continue with little to no change. The primary impact is that the southbound Highway 61 to eastbound Highway 34 movement will be closed until the project is complete. This closure will remain in place until the bridge overlay project is completed in November.

Drivers are encouraged to allow extra travel time and plan alternate routes if they typically use this connection.
