High School Basketball

The Mt. Pleasant girls’ team will be facing off against Fairfield tonight, January 31st, at home, while the boys’ will be going against Regina Catholic on the road tonight. KILJ will be on the call for the boys’ game with pregame at 6:15 pm.

Central Lee will be celebrating senior night tonight against Holy Trinity Catholic with the girls’ playing at 6 pm and the boys to follow. In their first matchup of the season, the Crusaders swept the Hawks.

New London will travel to take on Burlington Notre Dame tonight with the girls going at 6 pm. The Tigers split the first matchup with the Nikes with the girls falling in their game and the boys’ coming out with the 78-63 win.

The Danville Bears will be facing off against West Burlington tonight. The boys’ team will be trying to pull off the upset against the Falcons, as West Burlington enters the contest undefeated and ranked in Class 2A.

WACO will be at home against Lone Tree tonight with the girls’ going at 6 pm and the boys to follow. The boys’ team is still undefeated at 17-0 on the season and ranked 3rd in Class 1A.

The Winfield-Mt. Union Wolves will be hosting Highland tonight with the girls’ going at 6 pm. The girls’ team is 18-0 on the season and ranked 9th in Class 1A.

High School Wrestling

The inaugural girls’ sanctioned wrestling State Tournament will take place on February 2nd and 3rd. Stay tuned to KILJ for interviews with Ella McNamee, Rylee Rice, Bralyyn Wagler, and Grace Fort.

The next competition for the Mt. Pleasant boys’ team will be at the Class 2A District 9 postseason meet. To make it to state, wrestlers in Class 1A or 2A must finish in first or second-place and third-place finishers in Class 3A District Tournaments will also qualify.

The Regional Duals for boys’ wrestling has been set with Burlington Notre Dame going against Knoxville in the first round with the winner matching up against Williamsburg for Class 2A today.

High School Bowling

Mt. Pleasant will travel to face off against Keokuk tonight.

Iowa Wesleyan Athletics

The women’s basketball team will be back in action February 3rd at the Crowley’s Ridge Classic. The Tigers are currently 5-0 in conference play.

The 23rd-ranked men’s team improved their win streak to 20 games and 21-1 on the season and they will be tested against #20 Florida College in a CAC Classic on February 3rd.

The men’s wrestling team will be facing off against William Penn University tonight on the road.

The women’s wrestling team will be competing in the Grand View Open on February 4th.

The Tigers next indoor meet will be tomorrow, February 1st, at the Grand View Field Meet, which will have only throwers and jumpers compete.

1920 – Quebec Bulldogs center Joe Malone sets an NHL record with 7 goals in a 10-6 win against Toronto St. Patricks at the Quebec Arena.

1923 – Montreal Canadiens beat Hamilton Tigers, 5-4 at the Mount Royal Arena, Montreal; first penalty-free game played in NHL history.

2015 – 17 year old Lydia Ko of New Zealand becomes the youngest golfer in men’s or women’s golf history to be ranked No. 1 in the world.

Prep Girls’ Wrestling- In the inaugural year of sanctioned girls’ wrestling for the state of Iowa, Southeastern Iowa will have plenty of representatives in Coralville at the Xtream Arena. Here are some of the wrestlers and what place they finished in at the Regional Qualifier to make it to state.

Ella McNamee from Mt. Pleasant will be representing the Panthers in the 105-pound weight class sporting a 23-4 record going into the state competition. She finished in 3^rd place after defeating Jacey Mason of Davenport by fall. Stay tuned to KILJ for an interview with McNamee.

WACO has three  representatives going to state, including two 2^nd place finishers. Rylee Rice at 110-pounds dominated the competition making it to the Championship match, but fell to Kate Seery of Linn-Mar by decision to claim 2^nd place. Bralyyn Wagler, who is 29-5 on the season, was the other 2^nd place finish with a narrow defeat against Trinity Young of Linn-Marr by fall. Wagler will be competing in the 235-pound weight class. Grace Fort at the 190-pound weight class will be the last Warrior representing WACO, as she placed 4^th defeating Zenlynn Lee by fall earlier in the tournament earning a no contest in the fourth place match. Wapello will have one wrestler compete at state, as Madi Lundvall narrowly defeated Jacey Mason of Davenport by decision in the 4^th place match. She will be competing in the 105-pound weight class.

Teegan Sulentich of Washington dominated the 155-pound weight class for much of the year sporting a 30-5 record going into state. She earned 2^nd place after falling to Jorie Hanenburg of North Scott in the championship bout.

Fort Madison had a Regional Qualifier champion in Hailey Kemper at the 100-pound weight class. The Bloodhound went 3-0 in the tournament and defeated Gabi Robertson of Mid-Prairie by fall in the championship match.

Mid-Prairie will have three other wrestlers represent the Golden Hawks at state. Ellie Brenneman at 135 pounds claimed 2^nd place after falling in the championship bout to Dakota Whitman of Independence. She is 35-9 on the season. Grace Conway will be competing in the 140-pound weight class after winning the 3^rd place match by fall over Josephine Budederi of Cedar Rapids Jefferson. Lastly, Ellie Callahan defeated Joscelyn Stricker of Cedar Rapids Kennedy by a 6-2 decision in the 170-pound 3^rd place match.

Louisa-Muscatine will have Molly Bramble compete in the 235-pound weight class after finishing in 4^th place.

Keokuk will have Jalyiah Garder compete in the 155-pound weight class after capturing 4^th place in a no contest.

Jasmine Luedtke won the 110-pound championship match for Ottumwa, and Deliah Subsin will be competing at 190-pounds for the Bulldogs after going 3-1, only falling in the championship match by fall to Halley Beaudet of Dallas Center-Grimes.

The State Championship will be taking place Thursday and Friday, February 2^nd and 3^rd, KILJ will have results as they come in.
