One person died in an early-morning house fire Sunday in Burlington.
The Burlington Fire Department was initially dispatched to a medical emergency at 1228 Madison Avenue at approximately 2:38 a.m. The call was upgraded to a structure fire two minutes later.
Firefighters arrived within four minutes of the initial dispatch and found smoke coming from the first floor of the two-story residence. Crews entered the home to fight the fire and search for anyone who remained inside.
Firefighters located one person inside the residence. Despite their efforts, the individual was pronounced dead at the scene. The victim’s identity is being withheld pending positive identification and notification of family members.
Officials said the home was occupied by one adult and one juvenile at the time of the fire. Functional smoke alarms were present and operating.
Investigators determined that the fire was accidental and is not considered suspicious.
The West Burlington Fire Department and several other local agencies assisted at the scene. Additional information will be released by the Burlington fire marshal as it becomes available.
