Reynolds Calls Special Session for $15 Billion Lee County Steel Mill Project

Governor Kim Reynolds has called Iowa lawmakers back to Des Moines for a special legislative session tied to a proposed $15 billion steel mill in Southeast Iowa.

Reynolds signed a proclamation Tuesday morning calling the General Assembly into special session. The Iowa House and Senate are expected to gavel in Friday as lawmakers consider legislation connected to the massive economic development project.

Mesabi Metallics plans to build the steel complex in Lee County. The company says the project would represent a $15 billion investment and create about 1,750 permanent jobs, along with as many as 6,000 construction jobs while the facility is being built. Steel production is expected to begin around 2030.

President Donald Trump announced the project Monday at the White House, where Reynolds joined company leaders and members of Iowa’s congressional delegation. Mesabi Metallics plans to supply the Iowa facility with iron ore from its mining operation in Minnesota.

Details of what lawmakers will be asked to approve during the special session have not yet been released.

The House and Senate are scheduled to convene Friday.
