Slow Down, Watch for Farm Machinery

With harvest underway across Iowa, drivers are being reminded to slow down and watch for farm machinery on rural roads.

Drivers should keep a safe following distance and make sure they have plenty of time and visibility before attempting to pass. Farm equipment can also be wider than a traffic lane and may not be able to move completely onto the shoulder.

Farm machinery operators are also encouraged to keep lights, signals, reflectors and slow-moving vehicle emblems clean and visible. When moving several pieces of equipment, operators should leave space between them to allow traffic to safely move through.

ISU Extension says staying alert, slowing down and taking extra precautions can help keep both motorists and farmers safe during the busy harvest season.
